The wild species behind ‘Exotica’, Scindapsus pictus, comes from humid tropical forest extending from southeastern Bangladesh across mainland Southeast Asia to western and central Malesia. It begins as a juvenile root climber, attaching to tree trunks and producing larger leaves once supported growth is established.

Scindapsus pictus ‘Exotica’ originated in cultivation as a selection of the species. It was already in cultivation by 1999 and was later listed as a parent of another Scindapsus pictus cultivar established by 2010.

Care for supported aroid vines

Support, leaf care and propagation: Attach the stems to a textured upright support to preserve the cultivar’s broad proportions and encourage larger future leaves. Shorten an overlong vine, leaving a node immediately below the cut, to redirect its growth, or take sections containing at least one node for propagation. Repot only when roots occupy the current container, keeping aerial roots available for the support rather than burying the stem deeply.

Light and support: Give Scindapsus pictus ‘Exotica’ abundant filtered light to support sturdy growth and closely spaced, broad leaves. Mild direct light is suitable after a gradual transition, but strong midday sun can mark the broad silver areas. Moderate humidity is enough if new foliage is not trapped against wet, still surfaces.

Root care, support and watering: Use a coarse aroid substrate suitable for climbing vines with large air spaces and reliable drainage. Wet the entire root ball after the upper mix has partly dried, allowing the deeper portion to retain slight moisture rather than becoming repeatedly bone dry. A large-leaved vine may use water quickly when actively climbing, yet an oversized pot can remain saturated at the centre long after the top appears dry. In winter, extend the interval in line with slower stem growth. Apply a balanced feed at moderate strength while nodes are extending.

When Scindapsus ‘Exotica’ Struggles

The larger leaves of ‘Exotica’ make water stress conspicuous, but visible droop does not justify automatic watering. A dry, light root ball with sound roots needs a full soak and drainage. Remove dark soft roots from persistently wet potting mix, then place the vine in a more open aroid mix. Keeping the pot continuously moist will not preserve its broad leaf proportions.

New leaves that become smaller and more widely spaced usually signal too little filtered light or the need for a textured support. Abrupt direct sun leaves fixed bleached or tan areas on the exposed side. Local mechanical splits remain dry and stable. Separate the vine from other plants and keep the leaf surface dry if a glassy-looking margin continues to spread.

Intrinsic silver fields are smooth and repeat across healthy leaves. Thrips scars are rough and irregular, commonly with black dots or distorted new growth. Scale and mealybugs leave identifiable covers or waxy bodies on stems and leaf backs. Confirm the pest directly before treatment, then check sheltered nodes repeatedly rather than relying on one application.

Scindapsus pictus ‘Exotica’ is toxic to people and pets

• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.

How did Scindapsus pictus get its name?

Scindapsus comes from the ancient Greek plant name skindapsos. The Latin adjective pictus means painted, decorated or coloured, referring to the patterned foliage of the species.
