Natural range and cultivation

The name f. heteroclada is encountered on a branching type of Rhipsalis teres. The species comes from south-eastern and southern Brazil, where it grows on trees and rock in Atlantic Forest and related woodland.

Heteroclada refers to plants with many differently sized, twiglike branches. Modern botanical treatments include this form within R. teres, while growers continue to use the older label for its recognisable branching pattern.

Care for waxy-leaved epiphytes

Light, settling in and watering: The heteroclada form of Rhipsalis teres grows well in bright, filtered light with mild sun after gradual acclimatisation. Intense, dry exposure can scar the fine branch tips, while deep shade produces weaker growth.

Temperature: Use a coarse organic and mineral mix with generous air space. Water thoroughly during warm active growth, allow partial drying, and reduce water as light and temperature fall.

Feeding: Apply dilute, low-nitrogen fertiliser while growth is active. A multi-jointed stem section can be rooted after the cut surface has dried briefly.

When something is wrong

Heteroclada naturally produces a mixture of fine and thicker twig-like branches. Thin terminal growth alone does not indicate low-light stretching when it is firm, well coloured and part of this established pattern. Concern is more appropriate when all new growth becomes unusually weak, pale and widely spaced, which points to inadequate light or excessive soft growth.

Firm wrinkling above a dry root zone calls for thorough watering and drainage. Limp growth above a wet mix indicates root loss. Dark, soft dieback moving from a joint should be removed back to clean tissue, and healthy multi-jointed sections can be rooted after the cuts dry briefly. Correct saturation or cold before resuming normal moisture.

Dry, tan scars on exposed branch tips can follow abrupt sun or mechanical rubbing. Fixed bumps, cottony clusters or sticky residue indicate scale or mealybugs instead. Search through the dense branching for hidden insects. When pests are present, move the plant away from neighbouring foliage and treat the infestation with a cactus-safe product. Choose sound cuttings that already show the characteristic mixed branching if severe damage requires renewal.

Rhipsalis teres: where the name comes from

Rhipsalis comes from Greek rhips, wickerwork or basket weave. The epithet teres is Latin for rounded, cylindrical or smoothly rounded in cross-section and describes the stems.

Joseph Gaertner established the genus Rhipsalis in 1788 in De Fructibus et Seminibus Plantarum, volume 1, page 137.

José Mariano da Conceição Vellozo first described it as Cactus teres in 1829 in Flora Fluminensis, page 207. Ernst Gottlieb von Steudel later placed it in Rhipsalis as Rhipsalis teres in 1841 in Nomenclator Botanicus, second edition, volume 2, page 449.
