Rhipsalis baccifera ssp. horrida

Origin of Rhipsalis baccifera ssp. horrida

Rhipsalis baccifera ssp. horrida is native to Madagascar. It grows on trees and rocky supports in forest, rooting into loose material that gathers around bark and crevices.

Its seeds can sometimes begin germinating while still inside ripe fruit, an unusual reproductive feature of this subspecies.

Indoor care for Rhipsalis baccifera ssp. horrida

Light and spacing: Give it bright indirect light and leave some room around the dense bristled growth. Gentle sun early or late in the day is suitable.

Humidity, airflow and water: Warm room temperatures and moderate humidity are suitable. Because the crown is dense, some air movement after watering is useful. Wait for the top of the mix to dry and the pot to feel lighter before watering again. Soak the mix evenly and allow all excess water to drain.

Potting mix: Choose an airy bark-based mix with pumice or perlite that drains readily while retaining some moisture.

Feeding and repotting: Crowded roots or a mix that stays wet much longer than usual are signs that repotting is due. Use fertiliser lightly while bristled branches are growing, then scale it back during slow growth.

Propagation: A healthy branched section makes a suitable cutting. Start it in an airy mix and keep the mix lightly moist.

Common issues with Rhipsalis baccifera ssp. horrida

• Bristled branches become narrow and deeply wrinkled: Deep wrinkling in the bristled branches usually means the plant needs water. If the pot is light and the mix is dry, water thoroughly and let it drain.
• Soft brown tissue appears inside the dense centre: Soft tissue hidden inside the dense centre can indicate rot where moisture has lingered. Use a clean tool to remove every affected section back to firm healthy tissue and discard the rot. If the dense centre remains damp long after watering, open the surrounding stems slightly and improve air movement. Check the roots and potting mix too; repot only if the roots are affected or the potting mix stays wet too long or has become dense.
• Cottony white insects hide among the bristles: Mealybugs can hide easily among the bristles. Isolate the plant, remove visible insects, and use a product labelled for mealybugs on ornamental plants. Follow the label, including any repeat treatment.
• Dry tan scars develop on exposed stems: Tan scars on the most exposed stems are consistent with sun scorch. Shift the plant out of strong direct light and introduce any gentler sun gradually.

Rhipsalis baccifera ssp. horrida has sharp parts

• This plant is non-toxic to cats and dogs. Its effects on people are unclear.
• Sharp spines or rigid plant parts can puncture the mouth, eyes, skin or paws.
• Handle it carefully. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after a serious injury, especially to the eye.

Why is it called Rhipsalis baccifera?

Rhipsalis comes from Greek rhips, wickerwork or basket weave. Baccifera combines Latin bacca, berry, with -fera, bearing, and means berry-bearing.

Joseph Gaertner established the genus Rhipsalis in 1788 in De Fructibus et Seminibus Plantarum, volume 1, page 137.

Johann Sebastian Mueller first described it as Cassytha baccifera in 1771 in The Sexual System of Linnaeus, volume 1, order 1. William Thomas Stearn later placed it in Rhipsalis as Rhipsalis baccifera in 1939 in Cactus Journal (Croydon), volume 7, page 107.
