Rhipsalis agudoensis

A wet Atlantic Forest epiphyte from Rio de Janeiro

Rhipsalis agudoensis is native to southwestern Rio de Janeiro state in Brazil, where it grows on trees in humid Atlantic Forest.

Its roots occupy bark crevices and loose organic debris, where frequent moisture is paired with constant airflow. The forest canopy is warm and humid, with filtered light. The succulent winged stems hold water between rain events.

How to care for Rhipsalis agudoensis at home

Filtered light for winged stems

Set the basket in bright filtered light. Mild sun early or late in the day is suitable. Prolonged midday sun can bleach the exposed ridges of the firm winged segments. In deep shade, new stems grow weakly.

Water before the root ball stays dry

Water thoroughly when the upper mix has dried, then let all surplus drain. Water this wet-forest cactus sooner than a desert cactus. Its roots still rot in waterlogged compost.

A bark-rich mix in a hanging pot

Combine chunky bark with pumice or perlite. Use a modest pot with a clear drainage hole. A secure hanging position gives the branching segments space and prevents their weight from resting against wet compost.

Warmth, humidity and active-season feeding

Keep away from cold draughts and provide moderate to high humidity with air movement. Feed at low strength as new segments form, then reduce water and fertiliser as light and growth slow.

Protect the joints during handling

Support the pot when moving the plant and guide the firm branches without folding them at their joints. Creased segments remain permanently marked.

Problems that may affect Rhipsalis agudoensis

Dark tissue where a winged stem meets the base

Translucent softness at a junction indicates decay associated with a saturated or cold root zone. Remove the affected section, improve drainage and let the remaining mix regain air before watering.

The firm winged segments become wrinkled

Inspect the roots before adding water. A dry, light root ball needs a thorough soak. Wet compost with limp stems points to damaged roots that need cleaning and fresh airy mix.

Pale scars form along exposed ridges

The raised angles receive the strongest light and can burn after an abrupt move into direct sun. Shift to filtered light and introduce any brighter exposure in stages.

Creases appear across the broad segments

Folding against a wall, shelf or narrow hanger leaves permanent lines in the firm wings. Reposition the basket and guide only flexible young growth.

White wax collects along areoles and joints

Check the ridges and branch junctions for mealybugs. Isolate the plant, remove visible insects and repeat control because the angular stem surface provides sheltered sites.

What does Rhipsalis agudoensis mean, and who first published it?

Rhipsalis comes from Greek rhips, wickerwork or basket weave. Agudoensis means “from Agudo”, preserving the locality used in the original name.
