Natural origin of Rhaphidophora tetrasperma

Rhaphidophora tetrasperma is native to Peninsular Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia. It grows on trees and rock in wet tropical forest, including sandstone and granite areas.

Young vines can press their leaves close to a climbing surface. Later growth extends away from it and produces deeply cut foliage. Wild stems can reach several metres and remain slender.

How to grow Rhaphidophora tetrasperma

• Support: Guide the flexible stem up a pole, trellis or plank and extend the support before the vine reaches the top.
• Light: Bright indirect light suits the plant. Gentle morning or evening sun can be introduced gradually.
• Watering: Water when the pot feels lighter and the upper mix has begun to dry. Wet the mix thoroughly, let it drain and check the centre of a large pot before watering again.
• Potting mix: Use a loose, well-draining mix in a pot with drainage holes. Move up one pot size when roots are crowded or the pot starts needing water unusually often.
• Warmth and humidity: Keep the plant warm and away from cold draughts. Normal household humidity is usually suitable; extra humidity can help new leaves unfold in very dry air.
• Feeding: Feed according to the fertiliser label while new leaves are forming, and stop when growth pauses.
• Pruning and propagation: Cut just above a node to shorten the vine. Each cutting needs at least one healthy node, and a rooted cutting should be given a support early.

• Several new leaves stay small and mostly whole: The growing stem may be trailing, the vine may have reached the top of its support or the plant may have moved into weaker light. Give the vine a climbing support again and provide bright indirect light. A single simpler leaf can appear after a cut or change in growth; a sustained run of small, whole leaves points to weak light or poor climbing contact.
• The gaps between leaves widen and the vine leans to one side: Uneven or weak light is pulling the growing tip towards the light. Improve the light and guide the flexible stem while it is easy to move.
• Rapid yellowing follows repeated watering: Check whether the lower potting mix is staying wet for too long and inspect the roots. Rhaphidophora combines Greek rhaphis, meaning needle, with phorein, meaning to bear, referring to the needle-like raphide crystals in its tissues. Tetrasperma combines Greek tetra, four, with sperma, seed.

Justus Carl Hasskarl established the genus Rhaphidophora in 1842 in Flora, volume 25, issue 2, supplement 1, page 11.
