Native range and habitat of Rhaphidophora hongkongensis

Rhaphidophora hongkongensis is native to Assam and Bangladesh, southern China, Taiwan and Indochina. It grows in valley rain forest and evergreen forest, where it climbs trees and stone walls.

Care for Rhaphidophora hongkongensis

• Support: Give the main vine a pole, plank or trellis and tie it loosely. Leave room for side branches to hang or guide them separately.
• Light: Bright indirect light suits the plant. Introduce direct sun gradually.
• Watering: Let the top and centre of the mix lose some moisture, then lift the pot. Water when it feels lighter and empty any water left in the saucer or outer pot.
• Potting mix: Use a loose mix that holds some moisture and drains well. Replace it if it collapses, water runs through and leaves parts of the mix dry or the centre stays wet for too long.
• Warmth and humidity: Keep the vine warm and away from cold windows. Normal household humidity is usually suitable; consistent watering helps long new leaves unfold smoothly.
• Feeding and pruning: Feed according to the fertiliser label while the plant is growing. When growth pauses, stop feeding and wait for the mix to dry further before watering. Shorten an overlong side branch just above a node.
• Repotting and propagation: Repot when roots are crowded, drainage has slowed or the support becomes unstable. Stem cuttings with at least one healthy node can root in water or a loose propagation mix.

Troubleshooting Rhaphidophora hongkongensis

• New side branches stay thin with pale leaves and wide gaps: Slender hanging side branches are normal, but a run of pale, widely spaced leaves usually points to dim light. Move the plant gradually to bright indirect light and keep the growing tip facing the light.
• Long leaves curl or crease at the edges: Check for dry potting mix, hot, dry air or crowding against the support. If the mix is dry, water thoroughly and empty the saucer or outer pot. Move the plant away from hot, dry air and leave clear space for new leaves.
• Several lower leaves yellow while the mix stays damp: Inspect the roots. Trim off soft dark roots and any discoloured lower stem with a clean tool, cutting into firm healthy tissue. Discard the rotten material and replant in fresh, well-draining mix.
• Sticky residue, raised brown bumps or cottony clusters appear: Check the stem and the points where leaves join it for scale or mealybugs. Isolate the plant and apply a product labelled for the identified pest on indoor ornamental plants. Repeat treatment at the interval stated on the label. Where does the name Rhaphidophora hongkongensis come from?

Rhaphidophora combines Greek rhaphis, meaning needle, with phorein, meaning to bear, referring to the needle-like raphide crystals in its tissues. The geographical name hongkongensis means “from Hong Kong”.

Justus Carl Hasskarl established the genus Rhaphidophora in 1842 in Flora, volume 25, issue 2, supplement 1, page 11.
