Piper sarmentosum

Botanical origin of Piper sarmentosum

Piper sarmentosum is a tropical Asian species found in rainforests and monsoon forests across a wide part of South and Southeast Asia and into northern Australia.

Its aromatic leaves have a long history of culinary and traditional use in parts of Southeast Asia.

Care for Piper sarmentosum

• Water: Keep the mix evenly moist while the plant is growing. Water when the surface starts to dry and let excess water leave the pot freely.
• Light: Give medium to bright filtered light. Gentle morning sun is suitable when introduced gradually.
• Substrate: Use a fertile, airy mix that stays lightly moist, with organic potting material, fine bark and pumice or perlite.
• Temperature: Keep the plant warm, around 18–28 °C.
• Pruning and spread: Cut long runners above a healthy node to keep the plant dense. Lay selected stems against the substrate when you want the nodes to root and fill the container.
• Humidity: Aim for moderate humidity. Keep it higher while new runners and leaves are developing.
• Feeding: Feed regularly at a moderate dose while the plant is growing quickly.
• Repotting: Repot when the roots and rooted runners have filled the container. A wider pot gives the creeping stems room to establish.
• Propagation: Take a stem cutting with two nodes and root it in lightly moist substrate, or divide runners that already have their own roots.

Problems with Piper sarmentosum

• Leaves wilt and the substrate is dry: Fast growth can dry the pot quickly. Water thoroughly and check the mix more often during rapid growth.
• Leaves yellow while the pot stays wet: Compacted or overly wet substrate can stress the roots. Check drainage and loosen or replace the mix if it has collapsed.
• Runners become long and sparsely leafed: The plant needs more light. Move it gradually into brighter filtered light and trim long stems back to a healthy node.
• Silvering, stippling or webbing appears on leaves: Thrips or spider mites may be present. Separate the plant from others and use a treatment labelled for the pest, repeating it as directed on the label.
• Nodes or stem bases become soft: Rot can spread through wet creeping stems. Cut rotten tissue back to firm healthy growth with a clean tool, discard rotten material and reroot healthy runners in fresh substrate.

Keep Piper sarmentosum away from children and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its effects after chewing or swallowing are unclear, and plant material can still cause an upset stomach.
• Contact a veterinarian or medical professional if symptoms develop or do not settle.

The meaning and history of Piper sarmentosum

Piper is Latin for pepper. Sarmentosum comes from Latin sarmentum, a long shoot or runner, and describes the plant's spreading stems, which root where they touch the ground.

Carl Linnaeus established the genus Piper in 1753 in Species Plantarum, page 28.

William Roxburgh first described Piper sarmentosum in 1810 in Asiatic Researches, volume 11, page 565.
