Philodendron tortum

From Brazil’s Ducke Forest Reserve to Bolivia

M. L. Soares and Simon Mayo described Philodendron tortum in 2001 from the Ducke Forest Reserve region of central Amazonas, Brazil.

The species climbs more than 2 m up tree trunks in humid lowland and plateau forest. Its known range extends from northern Brazil west into Bolivia.

Philodendron tortum: care for finely divided leaves

• Light: Give the vine enough bright filtered light to develop increasingly divided mature leaves, introducing any direct exposure gradually.
• Water: Check the top of the mix and water thoroughly once it starts drying. The roots need continued moisture without constant wetness.
• Humidity and airflow: Because the narrow segments can catch as they emerge, moderate humidity is useful during unfurling. Gentle airflow helps keep the divided canopy dry.
• Temperature: Protect this tropical climber from cold draughts and keep conditions warm and steady.
• Substrate: Choose a porous mix in which durable coarse particles provide structure and finer material retains moisture.
• Support: A strong upright support with a rough surface lets the vine climb continuously and develop its finely divided mature shape.
• Feeding: Avoid heavy feeding, which can produce weak, soft growth; a moderate dose during active growth is enough.
• Repotting: Fine lobes snag and bend easily, so protect them when the roots require a larger pot or fresh mix.
• Propagation: For propagation, cut below a healthy node or air-layer the vine. The first leaves may be simpler until the new vine matures on its support.

Philodendron tortum: fine divisions, sticky droplets and injury

• Sticky droplets: Clear or amber nectar produced by the plant can be normal. Honeydew becomes more likely when mealybugs, scale or aphids are present with wax, bodies or black sooty growth; trace the droplets before treating.
• Fine mature divisions: The mature leaf is naturally divided into very thin, sometimes twisting segments. Regular divisions are not chewing damage, and dry old leaf sheaths can also twist around the stem.
• Tears and curled edges: Fine segments catch, bend and dry at their margins easily. Give the plant clearance, stabilise its support and correct uneven root moisture without pulling a caught new leaf apart.
• Pests across fine segments: Black-speckled silver scars indicate thrips; many pale points or webbing indicate mites. Trace each narrow segment with magnification, including the lower surface near its base. Separate the vine and treat every affected division with a product intended for the pest found.
• Jagged gaps between fine divisions: Jagged gaps or scalloped edges require a search for slugs, snails, caterpillars, beetles or physical snagging. Remove the cause and protect new leaves as they open.
• Limp divided leaves above wet roots: Fine divided leaves that become yellow and limp while the pot remains wet can reflect roots damaged by lack of air. Remove soft roots, renew compacted mix and allow water to drain promptly after each watering.

Philodendron tortum: fine leaves and chewing risk

• Finely divided leaves: All of its narrow leaf sections are unsafe to chew. Its living tissues contain bundles of insoluble calcium-oxalate crystals called raphides. Chewing releases these microscopic needles, which irritate the lips, mouth and throat. Keep its narrow leaf sections and climbing stem beyond chewing reach, including fallen pieces.
• If a person chews it: Chewing can cause immediate burning or pain in the mouth, redness, drooling and swelling of the lips or tongue. Swallowing may become painful or difficult. Remove any visible plant pieces. Rinse the mouth with water, then spit out the water. Contact a local poison centre and identify the plant as Philodendron tortum. Do not induce vomiting. Do not force fluids if swallowing is painful or difficult.
• If a cat or dog chews it: Cats and dogs may drool, paw at the mouth, gag or vomit after chewing. They may also refuse food or develop swelling of the lips or tongue. Move the pet away from the plant. If it is safe, remove visible plant pieces and gently wipe or rinse the mouth. Call a veterinarian or animal poison centre and identify the plant as Philodendron tortum. Do not induce vomiting. Do not force food or liquid.
• Sap on skin or in the eyes: Broken leaf sections and cut stems or leaf stalks can expose sap. Sap can redden the skin and cause stinging or itching. In the eyes, it can cause painful irritation. Wash affected skin with soap and water for 15 minutes. If sap gets into an eye, rinse it with clean water for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical care if pain, redness or changes in vision are severe or continue.
• When to get urgent help: For a person, get urgent medical help for excessive drooling, severe swelling of the mouth or tongue, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or choking. For a pet, get urgent veterinary help for severe swelling of the mouth or tongue, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or choking.

Tortum: twisted by name and form

Latin tortus, rendered as tortum, means twisted, bent or contorted. The name points especially to its twisted prophylls, the protective structures around new growth, and also suits the contorted mature foliage. Philodendron takes its tree-loving meaning from Greek roots for love and tree. Maria de Lourdes Soares and Simon Mayo published the species in 2001.
