Philodendron tortum

Natural range and habitat of Philodendron tortum

Philodendron tortum comes from northern Brazil to Bolivia, where it grows in wet tropical habitat.

Growing Philodendron tortum

• Climbing support: Start the stem on a pole, plank or moss pole before the growing tip runs past the support. Keeping the stem climbing helps avoid long unsupported runners.
• Light: Give it bright indirect light along the full climbing stem, including the growing tip, and keep the upper vine out of deep shade.
• Watering: Let roughly half of the potting mix dry before watering, then soak the root ball thoroughly and let the pot drain. Avoid constant wetness and repeated severe drying.
• Potting mix: Use an airy aroid mix that drains promptly without becoming completely dry immediately after watering.
• Temperature: Provide steady warmth around 18–29 °C while preventing extended drops below 15 °C.
• Humidity: Around 50–60% is appropriate for everyday care. Allow light air movement around the leaves. Keep the finely divided foliage away from very dry heater air and provide gentle airflow around it.
• Feeding: A modest balanced feed during active growth is enough. Reduce or pause feeding when the plant is no longer making new leaves.
• Repotting: Move up one pot size when roots crowd the container. Refresh potting mix that has started to break down, keeping pot size appropriate to the roots. A much larger pot holds more wet mix around a relatively small root system.
• Propagation: Take a stem cutting with at least one node and place it in water or a light propagation mix. Keep it warm while roots form, then pot the cutting once the root system is established.

Bare runners, crisp tips and mite damage

• The vine grows long and bare between leaves: Check whether the growing tip has moved past its support or into weaker light. Extend the support and improve the light if needed, then judge the next section of growth before pruning.
• The narrow leaf tips turn brown and crispy: Look first for repeated hard dry-outs, then for very dry room air or fertiliser and mineral build-up. Keep moisture more even and move the plant away from hot dry airflow; our brown leaf tips guide helps work through persistent salt-related damage.
• Fine pale speckling appears on the narrow leaf segments: Search along the central vein and both sides of the fine lobes. If moving mites or webbing are present, isolate the plant and rinse the narrow segments carefully. Follow with a houseplant treatment labelled for spider mites and continue at the intervals stated on its label.

Philodendron tortum is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

What does Philodendron tortum mean, and who first published it?

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.” The Latin adjective tortum means twisted, referring to the curling narrow divisions.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.

Maria de Lourdes Soares and Simon J. Mayo first described Philodendron tortum in 2001 in Feddes Repertorium, volume 112, page 42.
