Philodendron ‘Sucre’s Slim’

Origin of Philodendron ‘Sucre’s Slim’

Horticultural collections grow Philodendron ‘Sucre’s Slim’ as a distinctive narrow-lobed climbing cultivar. Its original introduction, namesake and parentage are unknown.

Growing Philodendron ‘Sucre’s Slim’ indoors

• Support: Attach the climbing stem before it sprawls so mature growth can continue upward on a pole or plank.
• Leaf clearance: Keep clips, neighbouring plants and hard pot edges clear while the thin lobes separate from a new folded leaf.
• Light: Use bright filtered light and protect the narrow exposed sections from harsh direct sun.
• Water and mix: Water after the upper mix begins to dry, soaking the root ball thoroughly and letting the excess drain from a coarse airy potting mix.
• Temperature and humidity: Aim to keep the growing area around 18–29 °C. Keep humidity around 50–60%.
• Feeding: During new node and leaf production, use complete fertiliser at a measured rate; then reduce feeding as growth slows.
• Repotting: Repot once the roots are crowded or the plant-and-support setup begins to lose stability. Move ‘Sucre’ up one small pot size and re-fix its support so the plant remains steady.
• Propagation: Use a healthy section of stem with a node, with an aerial root already present where possible.

Problems to watch for on Philodendron ‘Sucre’s Slim’

• A narrow lobe tears as the leaf opens: Look for a snag on clips, neighbouring foliage or a hard pot edge and clear that obstacle before the next leaf unfurls.
• New leaves are smaller and less divided: Check whether the stem is still attached to its support and whether the position is bright enough. Reattach the stem or move it gradually to stronger filtered light, then judge the next leaf before changing feeding.
• Silver scars or fine stippling develop on the narrow lobes: Silver scars with black specks inside the folds point toward thrips; fine pale stippling on the blade surfaces points more toward mites. Confirm the pest, isolate the plant, clean accessible pests from the foliage and use a treatment currently labelled for that pest on indoor ornamentals according to the label.
• The stem loses vigour above a wet pot: Stop watering and check drainage. If the stem remains limp as the mix begins to dry, inspect the roots, remove collapsing or rotten tissue and repot the sound root system in fresh aerated substrate when the existing mix has failed.

Philodendron ‘Sucre’s Slim’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

Who first published Philodendron, and what does the name mean?

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.”

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.
