Origin and background of Philodendron squamicaule

Philodendron squamicaule is native from south-eastern Nicaragua through Costa Rica and Panama to Colombia and Ecuador, where it grows primarily in wet tropical habitats as a climber.

Thomas B. Croat and Michael H. Grayum formally described the species in 1997 from material collected in Panama.

How to care for Philodendron squamicaule

Support and petiole handling: Train the main stem onto a stable pole or plank and keep ties off the textured petioles. Use loose ties around the stem only until aerial roots take hold.

Water and substrate: Use a loose, well-drained mix that retains some moisture. Let the surface dry slightly, water thoroughly and drain the pot completely, keeping the climbing stem above the substrate.

Humidity and airflow: Moderate humidity helps tender petiole and leaf tissue develop cleanly. Very dry winter air can mark fresh growth, but higher humidity must be paired with airflow so the petiole scales and old sheath fibres dry promptly after watering.

Light and temperature: Give bright indirect light, keep the plant above 15 °C and protect it from strong summer sun, cold draughts and hot radiators.

Feeding and repotting: Feed during active growth. Repot when roots become crowded, the mix compacts or the support becomes unstable, handling the textured petioles carefully and preserving established climbing roots where possible.

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.” The epithet squamicaule combines Latin squama, scale, with caulis, stem.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.

Thomas Bernard Croat and Michael Howard Grayum first described Philodendron squamicaule in 1997 in Annals of the Missouri Botanical Garden, volume 84, page 529.
