Philodendron mamei

Natural range and habitat of Philodendron mamei

Philodendron mamei is native to southern Ecuador and grows terrestrially in wet tropical habitat. It has been recorded on steep banks, where the creeping stem spreads close to the ground.

How to care for Philodendron mamei

• Container: Choose a broad pot with room ahead of the growing end of the creeping stem.
• Watering: Water when the surface has just dried, then let the container drain fully and keep the potting mix around the roots evenly moist between waterings.
• Potting mix: Use a well-drained, peat-free mix with added perlite or another coarse material to keep air around the roots.
• Light: Bright diffused light supports steady growth; protect the leaves from strong direct sun.
• Temperature and humidity: Temperatures near 18–29 °C are suitable; use a warmer position during sustained periods below 15 °C. Aim for 50–60% humidity.
• Feeding: During new shoot growth, use a modest dose of complete houseplant fertiliser; then reduce feeding as growth slows.
• Repotting: Move to a wider pot when the creeping stem reaches the container edge or the roots become crowded, keeping the stem close to the surface of the fresh mix.
• Propagation: For Philodendron mamei, propagate from a section of the creeping stem that has a growing point and its own roots, or divide rooted sections when the plant naturally branches.

Problems and solutions for Philodendron mamei

• Yellow leaves while the mix remains wet: If yellowing continues, inspect the roots for mushy, hollow or foul-smelling tissue; brown colour alone does not mean rot. Keep all firm roots. Cut only confirmed rotten sections back to firm tissue with disinfected scissors, discard them and replace compacted mix with fresh, airy substrate.
• Pale speckles or fine webbing: Inspect both leaf surfaces for moving mites or webbing. Isolate the plant if spider mites are present, rinse sturdy foliage and use a houseplant treatment labelled for spider mites, repeating it according to the label. The spider-mite guide explains further steps.
• Cottony clusters or fixed bumps: Check petioles, leaf bases and undersides for mealybugs or scale. Keep the plant separate, remove visible pests and use a product labelled for the pest you find and for indoor ornamental plants. Follow its repeat intervals and check new growth. The mealybug guide helps identify white cottony insects.

Philodendron mamei is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

When and where was Philodendron mamei first published?
