Philodendron ‘Green Dragon’

Origin of Philodendron ‘Green Dragon’

Philodendron ‘Green Dragon’ is a solid-green, climbing horticultural selection whose lineage is still unclear.

How to care for Philodendron ‘Green Dragon’

A secure climb from the start. Install firm vertical support early and fasten the stem with ties loose enough to accommodate thickening. Leave clear space for the broad side lobes to unfold. Strong attachment steadies the climb, and future leaf size and lobe pattern continue to vary with development.

Light. Keep the plant in bright filtered light. Increase the light gradually when moving it to a brighter position.

Temperature. Use 18–29 °C as the normal growing range and protect it from extended periods below 15 °C. Protect the plant from draughts and sharp temperature changes.

Humidity. As a practical humidity target, keep the surrounding air near 50–60% humidity.

Watering and mix. Before each watering, feel below the surface of the mix and lift the pot. Water only once the upper layer feels dry, has lost its cool dampness and the pot is noticeably lighter. Water thoroughly and let the pot drain fully. An open, airy mix lets excess water drain promptly.

Feeding. Feed with houseplant fertiliser at light strength during active growth and reduce applications when the plant slows down.

Repotting. Repot once the roots are crowded or the plant-and-support setup begins to lose stability. Move Philodendron ‘Green Dragon’ up one small pot size and re-fix its support so the plant remains steady.

Propagation. Take a stem section with a node or use layering. Stem material needs at least one node to produce new stem growth. A newly rooted cutting may produce a run of simpler juvenile leaves before stronger lobes return.

Understanding growth and problems on Philodendron ‘Green Dragon’

Young or post-cutting leaves begin simply and later become narrower through the centre or more lobed: This is normal development. Look at a run of leaves and maintain steady support, light and root conditions as new growth firms.

A blade shows one dry tear, or rolled growth repeatedly opens scarred and distorted: Snagging or rubbing usually causes a stable tear. Recurrent silvered scars or distortion can indicate thrips, and stippling with webbing can indicate mites. Make room for leaves to open, stabilise the support and inspect concealed growth. When pest signs appear, isolate the plant, identify the pest and clean accessible material. Apply a suitable product labelled for that pest to exposed surfaces and concealed rolled growth, following the label for repeat treatment.

New leaves become smaller or less lobed as the spaces between leaves widen or the stem bends away: Weak attachment, dim light, recent propagation or root stress can interrupt stronger development. Secure the stem again with room for thickening, increase light gradually and inspect the root zone before deciding whether feeding is appropriate.

Pale mosaic-like markings or rings return with distortion or stunting: This recurring pattern signals abnormal growth. Pests, root trouble, nutrient imbalance or spray injury are possible, and a virus-like disorder also deserves consideration. Isolate the plant when the pattern recurs or spreads, check concealed growth for pests and review root condition, feeding and recent sprays. Use firm, healthy nodes for propagation. Arrange local testing before disposal or disease-specific treatment.

Leaves droop or yellow while the mix stays wet and the pot feels heavy: Prolonged saturation or poor drainage can reduce root-zone oxygen and may lead to root rot. Pause watering, remove standing water and clear the drainage path. Inspect the roots when decline persists, retaining firm roots and removing dead, soft tissue. Repot into an airy, freely draining medium when the mix has become compacted or collapsed, then align watering with the available light.

Leaves droop and their edges crisp when the pot is light and the mix is dry: Underwatering, a water-repellent root ball, heat or dry air may be responsible; root damage and salts can mimic drought stress. Soak the root ball thoroughly, verify that its centre is wet and allow all excess water to drain. Check moisture sooner. Continued wilt in evenly moist medium calls for a root inspection and a pause in further watering.

Water-soaked, haloed or dead spots continue to enlarge or return: An advancing pattern can indicate bacterial or fungal leaf-spot disease, often encouraged by wet foliage and weak airflow. Sun, cold, spray injury and physical damage can leave fixed spots. Isolate an advancing case, keep foliage dry, improve airflow and remove badly affected tissue cleanly. Select firm, healthy growth for propagation, and obtain a local diagnosis before using disease-specific chemicals.

Cottony clusters, fixed bumps, sticky residue or soft-bodied insects appear elsewhere on the plant: Mealybugs, scale or aphids may be feeding on exposed or concealed tissue. Isolate the plant, identify the pest and clean accessible areas. Apply an appropriate labelled treatment to open surfaces and hidden sites, then follow the label for repeat inspection and treatment so sheltered insects are reached.

Philodendron ‘Green Dragon’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

How did Philodendron get its name?

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.”

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.
