Philodendron gloriosum

Along the ground in Colombia’s forests

In Colombia, the stem of Philodendron gloriosum grows horizontally along the floor of wet Andean and Orinoco-region forests at roughly 350–700 m.

Édouard André published the species in 1876. The IUCN assessed it as Vulnerable in 2021 because of its restricted wild range and continuing habitat decline.

Philodendron gloriosum: crawler care in a wide pot

• Light: Place it in bright filtered light. Direct midday sun can mark the soft surface of its broad velvet leaves.
• Water: Let the surface begin to dry before soaking the mix evenly, then empty any water collected beneath the pot. The horizontal stem must remain at the surface, clear of continually wet mix.
• Humidity and airflow: Emerging velvet leaves are less likely to stick in moderate to high humidity. Maintain airflow around both the foliage and the exposed rhizome.
• Temperature: Warm, steady indoor temperatures are suitable; protect the crawler from cold floors and draughts.
• Substrate: The roots need an airy mix that stays evenly moist. Rest the rhizome at or just above the surface.
• Space: Its rhizome advances sideways across the soil, so use a wide or rectangular container and guide the tip into open space. It does not need a vertical pole.
• Feeding: While new leaves are forming, give a light feed and flush away any salts collecting around the surface roots.
• Repotting: Repot into a wider container before the leading tip reaches the edge. Extra depth is useful only when the roots need it.
• Propagation: For division, cut the rhizome so every section retains a living bud or growing point, ideally with established roots.

Philodendron gloriosum: rhizome position, velvet and leaf damage

• Tip at the pot edge: A healthy growing point can stall when the horizontal stem reaches the wall of the container. Guide it into open mix or move the plant to a wider pot; extra fertilizer will not solve a lack of space.
• Veins and young leaf margins: Pale veins and, in some plants, pinkish young margins are normal. Irregular feathering or mosaic that crosses the vein pattern, especially with repeated distortion, warrants isolation and testing.
• Soft rhizome: Wet mix covering the horizontal stem can make it soften, darken and develop an odour. Lift healthy tissue to the surface, remove rotten portions with a clean tool and restore an airy root zone.
• Marks across the velvet blade: Dust and mineral residue sit on the surface, while mites create many pale damaged points within the leaf. Clean gently with a dry soft cloth and inspect the lower surface with magnification before treating.
• Injury inside rolled growth: Thrips often feed inside rolled growth, leaving silver scars, black specks and uneven expansion. Move the plant away from other plants, inspect every emerging leaf and use a thrips-labelled product at the repeat interval given on its label.
• Crisp margins on broad leaves: Dry root pockets, accumulated salts, direct sun or root loss can all produce crisp edges. Check the pot and rhizome first, remove the exposure and flush the mix when fertilizer residue is likely.

Philodendron gloriosum: rhizome, leaf and sap safety

• Surface rhizome and low leaves: Its low leaves and surface rhizome can sit within a pet’s reach, and all living parts are unsafe to chew. Its living tissues contain bundles of insoluble calcium-oxalate crystals called raphides. Chewing releases these microscopic needles, which irritate the lips, mouth and throat. Keep the pot where pets cannot reach the surface rhizome, low leaf stalks or broad leaves.
• If a person chews it: Chewing can cause immediate burning or pain in the mouth, redness, drooling and swelling of the lips or tongue. Swallowing may become painful or difficult. Remove any visible plant pieces. Rinse the mouth with water, then spit out the water. Contact a local poison centre and identify the plant as Philodendron gloriosum. Do not induce vomiting. Do not force fluids if swallowing is painful or difficult.
• If a cat or dog chews it: Cats and dogs may drool, paw at the mouth, gag or vomit after chewing. They may also refuse food or develop swelling of the lips or tongue. Move the pet away from the plant. If it is safe, remove visible plant pieces and gently wipe or rinse the mouth. Call a veterinarian or animal poison centre and identify the plant as Philodendron gloriosum. Do not induce vomiting. Do not force food or liquid.
• Sap on skin or in the eyes: Cuts to the surface rhizome or a leaf stalk can release fresh sap. Sap can redden the skin and cause stinging or itching. In the eyes, it can cause painful irritation. Wash affected skin with soap and water for 15 minutes. If sap gets into an eye, rinse it with clean water for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical care if pain, redness or changes in vision are severe or continue.
• When to get urgent help: For a person, get urgent medical help for excessive drooling, severe swelling of the mouth or tongue, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or choking. Why gloriosum means glorious

The Latin adjective gloriosus appears here as gloriosum and means glorious, splendid or renowned. Édouard André published the admiring name in 1876. It is a general expression of praise rather than a documented reference to one particular structure. Greek words for loving and tree form the genus name Philodendron. This species is a ground-level crawler despite that broader tree-loving name.
