Philodendron fibraecataphyllum

Natural range and habitat of Philodendron fibraecataphyllum

Philodendron fibraecataphyllum is native to Colombia and Ecuador, where it grows in warm, wet tropical forest.

Care for Philodendron fibraecataphyllum

• Support: Give the stem a rough vertical surface that aerial roots can grip. Attach only the main stem and leave the leaf stalks and new growth free.
• Light: Give bright indirect or well-filtered light.
• Warmth: Maintain a warm 18–29 °C range, moving the plant away from cold spots before temperatures remain below 15 °C. Regular airflow is helpful around the climbing stem and new growth.
• Humidity: Moderate to high humidity helps new leaves open cleanly. Avoid keeping the stem constantly damp, and let the top of the mix dry a little between waterings.
• Water and potting mix: Water after the upper part of the mix has partly dried. Use a chunky, bark-based mix so excess water drains freely.
• Feeding: Feed lightly while the plant is producing new growth and reduce fertiliser when growth slows.
• Repotting: Give the roots a little more room when they fill the pot, while keeping the support and container stable. When the setup loses stability, brace the support independently of the roots.
• Propagation: Take a vigorous stem piece with at least one node, keeping any useful aerial root attached.

Philodendron fibraecataphyllum troubleshooting

• Dry brown fibres remain around the stem: These are the dried remains of old leaf coverings and are normal. Leave them in place unless they are trapping soft, rotting material against the stem.
• White cottony material appears among the fibres: Check for mealybugs. Moving insects, sticky residue or soft white clusters are signs to isolate the plant, remove visible pests and use a suitable treatment.
• Leaves yellow while the mix stays wet: Water less often and improve drainage. If the stem also softens or the plant keeps declining, check the roots and remove only rotten roots.
• New leaves scar or catch as they open: Very dry air or old coverings that stay damp can interfere with the leaf opening. Keep humidity moderate, improve airflow and let the leaf emerge without pulling it free.

Philodendron fibraecataphyllum is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

Who first published Philodendron fibraecataphyllum, and what does the name mean?

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.” The epithet fibraecataphyllum combines Latin fibra, fibre, with cataphyllum, cataphyll.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.

Martha Marcela Mora and Thomas Bernard Croat first described Philodendron fibraecataphyllum in 2016 in Phytotaxa, volume 252, page 159.
