Eight metres above sea level in Ecuador’s Chocó

The specimen used to describe Philodendron fibraecataphyllum was collected in 1999 along the San Lorenzo road in Esmeraldas, Ecuador, only 8 m above sea level. Marcel Mora and Thomas Croat formally named it in 2016.

Its lowland range extends along the Pacific Chocó from Colombia’s Chocó Department to Esmeraldas Province in Ecuador. The plant climbs closely against trees in tropical wet forest from near sea level to about 160 m.

• Wet material at nodes: Fibres can hold water and loose plant debris against the stem. Remove only decaying material that comes away freely, improve airflow and keep irrigation water from collecting around the nodes.
• Dry node fibres: Dry pale fibres around the nodes are a normal feature and should remain in place when firmly attached. Their dry texture differs from tissue that is slimy, dark, foul-smelling or water-soaked.
• Insects beneath fibres and sheaths: Mealybugs, scale and thrips can shelter beneath fibres and old sheaths, while mites stipple the lower blade. Look for removable bodies, cottony wax, black specks or webbing, clear loose debris, and apply a pest-specific indoor-plant treatment without stripping away healthy attached fibres.
• Unfurling scars: Long marks that appear where a leaf was folded can result from rubbing or thrips. Check if the scar follows one contact point or is accompanied by black droppings and distorted new tissue.
• Root and stem decline: Yellow leaves, stalled growth and a wet pot can signal low oxygen around the roots. Cut away dead roots, replace dense mix and keep the stem base above the substrate surface.

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.” The epithet fibraecataphyllum combines Latin fibra, fibre, with cataphyllum, cataphyll.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.
