Philodendron deflexum

Natural range and habitat of Philodendron deflexum

The natural range of Philodendron deflexum covers Colombia and Peru. In the wild, it climbs through humid tropical forest.

Care guide for Philodendron deflexum

• Support: Give the climbing stem a stable pole or board before it becomes heavy. Tie the stem loosely and leave the leaf stalks free to move.
• Light: Give bright indirect light to support leaf growth and keep the gaps between leaves short.
• Water: Water once the upper layer of the mix has partly dried. Water thoroughly until excess drains from the pot, then empty any water left in the saucer or outer pot.
• Potting mix: Choose a coarse mix that retains some moisture without staying soggy.
• Temperature: Keep conditions around 18–29 °C. Maintain it in a location that stays clear of prolonged temperatures under 15 °C.
• Humidity: Aim for relative humidity around 50–60%. Allow air to move around new leaves, especially while a large leaf is opening.
• Feeding: During active vine growth, use complete fertiliser at a measured rate. Ease back when growth pauses.
• Repotting: Move to a slightly larger pot when the roots become crowded. Keep both the pot and climbing support stable as the plant grows.
• Propagation: Take a healthy stem cutting with at least one node; an existing aerial root can help establishment.

Philodendron deflexum troubleshooting

• A mature leaf hangs downward but stays firm: This can be normal for a large leaf. If the leaf stalk is firm and the pot is not very dry, the downward angle may simply be part of the plant’s growth.
• A new leaf tears as it opens: Dry conditions or contact with the support can catch the expanding leaf. Keep watering more even, maintain moderate humidity and let the leaf open without pulling it.
• Leaves yellow while the mix stays wet and smells stale: Let the mix dry further and improve drainage. If the plant keeps declining, check the roots and remove only roots that are soft or smell rotten.
• Long bare sections form and new leaves are smaller: The plant may need more light or better climbing support. Move it to brighter indirect light and give the stem a stable upright support.

Philodendron deflexum is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

Philodendron deflexum: where the name comes from

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.” The Latin epithet deflexum means bent down or turned aside.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott first described Philodendron deflexum in 1856 in Synopsis Aroidearum, page 101; Eduard Friedrich Poeppig had proposed the name.
