Philodendron ‘Congo Green’ is a cultivated green Congo-type selection. The names Congo Green, Green Congo and Congo are used inconsistently in horticulture, and the exact relationship of current stock to the patented cultivar ‘Congo’ remains uncertain.

Keeping Philodendron ‘Congo Green’ healthy

• Light: Give the plant medium to bright filtered light and rotate the pot periodically for even growth.
• Water: Allow part of the mix to dry, then water thoroughly and let all excess drain.
• Substrate: Use an airy, moisture-buffering mix with reliable drainage.
• Temperature and humidity: Keep conditions steadily warm with moderate humidity and airflow around the crown.
• Crown care: Leave lateral space for the leaves, clear debris from the crown, and wipe and inspect the foliage periodically.

Solving common problems in Philodendron ‘Congo Green’

• Yellowing and loss of firmness in a wet pot: Pause watering and check drainage. Check the roots if the plant continues to wilt or yellow while the root ball remains wet. If roots are firm and the mix drains freely, let the upper mix reach the normal dry cue before the next watering. Repot firm roots when the medium has collapsed or drains slowly. Confirmed rot calls for removal of dark, soft roots before the remaining firm roots are repotted cleanly. If the stem or crown is soft, isolate the plant and keep only firm healthy tissue; discard it if none remains.
• Dark wet lesions or trapped debris in the crown: Remove debris and keep the crown dry. If a lesion is wet, soft or expanding, isolate the plant, increase airflow, remove severely affected tissue with clean tools and obtain a diagnosis before treatment.
• Distorted or silvered new leaves: Thrips or physical damage during unfurling may be responsible. Inspect folds and undersides. If thrips are found, isolate the plant, rinse or clean it and use a treatment labelled for thrips.
• Sticky residue, cottony material or raised shells: Check for aphids, mealybugs and scale. Isolate the plant, clean off visible pests and use a treatment labelled for the confirmed pest, repeating inspection and treatment as directed.
• Fine pale stippling or webbing: Mites may be feeding on the leaf undersides. Isolate and inspect the plant, rinse the foliage where suitable and use a treatment labelled for mites. Misting with water by itself will not control them.
• Bleached patch after strong sun: A dry bleached patch after stronger exposure is consistent with sun or heat injury. Move the plant back to filtered light and acclimate it gradually. If the patch becomes wet or keeps expanding, isolate the plant and obtain a diagnosis.
• Brown leaf tips: Repeated hard drying, salts or damaged roots can look alike. If the mix has become very dry, water thoroughly and let it drain. After heavy feeding, pause fertiliser and flush only when drainage is good. If the damage continues together with yellowing, poor vigour or a persistently wet root ball, inspect the roots and remove dark, soft roots before repotting if rot is present.

Philodendron ‘Congo Green’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.
