Philodendron callosum

Natural range and habitat of Philodendron callosum

Philodendron callosum is native to Venezuela, Guyana, French Guiana and northern Brazil. It grows mainly on trees in warm, wet tropical forest, where the short stem stays close to the trunk or branch.

Care for Philodendron callosum

• Support: Give the climbing stem a stable vertical support and guide it upward with loose ties until the stem or aerial roots hold securely.
• Keep the central stem above the potting mix: Plant it at the same depth it was growing before and avoid burying the crown.
• Use a chunky mix that still holds a little moisture: Combine coarse bark with a little finer material so the pot stays airy without drying too quickly.
• Rewater after the surface has dried: Wet the mix evenly, then empty any collected water once the pot has finished draining.
• Set it in strong, filtered light: The thick leaves do well in a bright position. If you move the plant closer to a brighter window, increase the light gradually.
• Temperature and humidity: The plant grows comfortably at 18–29 °C and should not remain below 15 °C for long. Maintain roughly 50–60% humidity.
• Feeding: Use a moderate dose of complete houseplant fertiliser as fresh growth develops, then ease off as growth slows.
• Repotting: Repot once roots fill the container or water begins draining more slowly. Choose a pot close to the current root size so the mix dries at a predictable rate.
• Propagation method: Cut a healthy stem section with a node and use an existing aerial root when one is present.

What to check on Philodendron callosum

• The leaf surface looks evenly ribbed: This is normal for P. callosum. The regular raised veins are part of the leaf, not pest damage.
• White cottony clusters gather around the leaf bases: Check for mealybugs. Set the plant apart from neighbouring pots, remove visible mealybugs and use a houseplant mealybug treatment if the insects reappear.
• A dry tan patch appears on the window-facing side: Look for intense sun or contact with hot window glass; shift the pot farther back if either is the cause.
• The centre becomes soft and lower foliage yellows while the base remains wet: Pause watering and examine the crown and roots and make sure the container is draining. Remove any soft, rotten tissue and move the plant into fresh, loose mix when the old potting mix has broken down.

Philodendron callosum is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

Who first published Philodendron callosum, and what does the name mean?

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.” Callosum means calloused, hardened or thickened in Latin.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.

Kurt Krause first described Philodendron callosum in 1913 in Das Pflanzenreich, IV, 23Db, page 28.
