Philodendron aff. brandtianum ‘Wild Form’

Origin and identity of Philodendron aff. brandtianum ‘Wild Form’

This plant is sold provisionally as Philodendron aff. brandtianum ‘Wild Form’; its exact species identity and wild origin remain unresolved. Philodendron brandtianum is native to southern Colombia, northern Brazil and Bolivia and grows as a climber in seasonally dry tropical regions.

Care for Philodendron aff. brandtianum ‘Wild Form’

• Stabilise the slender stem before the foliage becomes top-heavy: Use a firm pole, plank or trellis and attach the stem loosely at several points as it climbs.
• Give the broad leaves room: Keep new foliage clear of neighbouring leaves and wet support so broad leaves can open without rubbing. Gentle airflow helps moisture dry from overlapping areas.
• Use bright filtered light: Increase the light gradually after moving the plant to a brighter position. Sudden hot sun can scorch or bleach patterned tissue.
• Rewater after the upper part of the root ball dries: Let the upper part of the root ball dry, then wet the pot thoroughly and drain it. A bark-based mix should remain open enough that the centre does not stay waterlogged for long periods.
• Temperature and humidity: Use roughly 18–29 °C for normal growth, moving it warmer before sustained cold reaches 15 °C. Humidity around 50–60% supports steady growth. Keep Philodendron aff.
• Feeding: During a flush of new climbing growth, use complete fertiliser at a measured rate. Cut back on feeding after new growth comes to a stop.
• Repotting: Use the next pot size when roots are crowded, and repot if the support setup has become unstable.
• Propagation: Choose a healthy stem section with at least one node and keep any existing aerial root attached.

Problems to watch for in Philodendron aff. brandtianum ‘Wild Form’

• Silver patterning changes between leaves: Differences in the amount and placement of silver can be normal. Leave healthy tissue alone unless colour change appears together with damage or declining growth.
• Fresh growth opens scarred: A leaf may have rubbed while unfolding, or thrips may have fed inside the fold. Look for black specks or insects; increase clearance for mechanical damage, or isolate and use a labelled thrips treatment when the pest is present.
• The vine weakens and new leaves shrink: Secure the stem to a broader support and increase filtered light gradually. If the root ball stays wet for unusually long, pause watering and improve drainage. After recent repotting or root disturbance, keep conditions steady and delay feeding until the vine resumes active growth.
• Yellowing spreads while the pot remains wet: Stop watering, remove collected water and improve the drainage path. Continued decline after the mix starts drying calls for a root inspection; keep all firm roots and cut only clearly rotten, soft sections back to healthy tissue with disinfected scissors. Discard the decay and replace compacted substrate that cannot drain normally. When the root system is badly reduced, use a firm nodal stem section as the restart point and propagate it in fresh, clean mix in a separate container. If rot has spread through every node and no firm root remains, discard the plant.
• Fine stippling disappears into the silver pattern: Use a close look at leaf undersides to check for mites and webbing. Separate an affected plant, rinse or clean accessible pests, then apply a houseplant product labelled for mites at the interval on its label.

Philodendron aff. brandtianum ‘Wild Form’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

Who first published Philodendron, and what does the name mean?

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.”

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.
