Philodendron brandtianum

Natural range and habitat of Philodendron brandtianum

Philodendron brandtianum grows naturally in southern Colombia, northern Brazil and Bolivia. It climbs trunks and branches in warm tropical forest with a noticeable drier season. Colombian plants grow from Amazonian lowlands into lower Andean forest, around 200–600 m.

Growing Philodendron brandtianum as a trailer or climber

• Choose the shape you want: Young vines can trail, but a pole or board is the better setup if you want larger, more mature climbing leaves.
• Place the silver foliage in strong filtered light: This helps keep the vine compact. Turn a trailing pot if growth repeatedly reaches in one direction.
• Temperature and humidity: Use about 18–29 °C for routine growth and protect it from extended periods under 15 °C. As the working humidity range, keep the surrounding air near 50–60% humidity. Gentle airflow around the foliage helps moisture clear.
• Use an airy mix that still holds some moisture: The roots should have good drainage without swinging between a waterlogged pot and a completely dry one.
• Let the surface dry slightly between waterings: Water deeply, then allow the container to drain fully before returning it to its usual spot.
• Feeding: During a flush of new climbing growth, use complete fertiliser at a measured rate; then pause or reduce feeding when growth loses momentum.
• Repotting: Repot when roots densely fill the container, moving up only slightly and keeping the climbing support stable. Keep the support secure on its own if the climbing setup becomes unstable.
• Propagation: Propagate from a sound node-bearing stem cutting, keeping the rooting medium lightly moist.

Growth and pest checks for Philodendron brandtianum

• The gaps along the vine get longer and new leaves stay small: Check the light and whether the stem has a good climbing surface. A brighter position and stable support can improve later growth.
• Silver marking decreases on a mature vine: This can be normal. Established P. brandtianum often becomes greener as the leaves increase in size.
• Sticky residue or hard bumps appear on stems or leaf backs: Check for scale insects. Move the plant away from your other plants, lift off accessible scale and use a houseplant treatment intended for scale insects.
• Older leaves yellow from the base while moisture lingers in the pot: Give the mix more time to dry. If the pot smells sour or the leaves remain limp, inspect the roots and replace old potting mix if it has become dense and slow to drain.

Philodendron brandtianum is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

Who first published Philodendron brandtianum, and what does the name mean?

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.” The species epithet brandtianum honours the German naturalist, physician, zoologist and botanist Johann Friedrich von Brandt.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.

Kurt Krause first described Philodendron brandtianum in 1913 in Das Pflanzenreich, IV, 23Db, page 46.
