Natural habitat of Philodendron brandtianum

Philodendron brandtianum grows naturally in southern Colombia, northern Brazil and Bolivia. It climbs trunks and branches in warm tropical forest with a noticeable drier season. Colombian plants grow from Amazonian lowlands into lower Andean forest, around 200–600 m.

• Choose the shape you want: Young vines can trail, but a pole or board is the better setup if you want larger, more mature climbing leaves.
• Use an airy mix that still holds some moisture: The roots should have good drainage without swinging between a waterlogged pot and a completely dry one.
• Let the surface dry slightly between waterings: Water deeply, then allow the container to drain fully before returning it to its usual spot.

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.” The species epithet brandtianum honours the German naturalist, physician, zoologist and botanist Johann Friedrich von Brandt.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.
