Philodendron billietiae × atabapoense

Parentage and origin of Philodendron billietiae × atabapoense

This plant is a cultivated hybrid between Philodendron billietiae and Philodendron atabapoense. Its exact origin as a cultivated hybrid remains unknown.

P. billietiae comes from Guyana, French Guiana and the Brazilian state of Pará, where it grows as a rainforest climber. P. atabapoense is native to Venezuela's Amazonas region and to Guainía in Colombia, where it climbs through lowland tropical forest.

Care for Philodendron billietiae × atabapoense

• Support the stem before it becomes heavy: A tall, firmly anchored pole keeps the vine steady as the leaves and stalks become longer and heavier.
• Give it bright, indirect light: Strong light supports healthy climbing growth, but protect a recently moved plant from abrupt direct sun.
• Use the weight of the pot as a watering clue: Water thoroughly when the top of the mix has started to dry and the container feels lighter. Hold off while the pot still feels heavy.
• Keep the mix coarse and well drained: Bark and other chunky ingredients help stop the roots from sitting wet for too long.
• Temperature and humidity: Keep temperatures around 18–29 °C, with prolonged cold below 15 °C avoided. Aim for 50–60% humidity.
• Fertilise modestly: A regular foliage feed is sufficient while the vine is actively producing fresh leaves.
• Repotting: Repot when roots fill the pot or when the plant-support combination is no longer stable. Choose a pot only slightly larger for the plant and secure its support again during repotting.
• Propagation: Take a healthy cutting with a node; an existing aerial root can support faster establishment.

Growth and health checks for this hybrid

• New leaves become smaller and the gaps along the stem increase: Check whether the vine still has firm contact with its support and whether it is getting enough light. Re-secure the stem and, if needed, move the plant gradually to a brighter spot, then judge the next few leaves.
• A leaf is greener or shows less burgundy than the one before it: This can be normal hybrid variation. Watch a few more leaves before assuming the colour change signals a problem.
• New growth is streaked or finely speckled: Silvery marks with tiny black specks often point to thrips; fine pale dots and webbing are more typical of spider mites. Identify the pest first, then separate the plant from the rest of the collection and treat the specific infestation.
• The plant wilts in wet potting mix: Pause watering and confirm that water leaves the container easily. If the vine remains limp, inspect the roots, cut away rotten parts and replace tired potting mix when necessary.

Philodendron billietiae × atabapoense is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

When were Philodendron billietiae and Philodendron atabapoense first published, and what do the names mean?

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.” The Latinized epithet billietiae means “of Billiet” and honours Frieda Billiet of the National Botanic Garden of Belgium. The epithet atabapoense refers to the Atabapo region and river in the upper Orinoco basin.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.

Thomas Bernard Croat first described Philodendron billietiae in 1995 in Novon, volume 5, page 24.

George Sydney Bunting first described Philodendron atabapoense in 1975 in Acta Botanica Venezuelica, volume 10, page 291.
