The collections behind Philodendron billietiae

Philodendron billietiae was first collected in Guyana by Henry Allan Gleason in 1921. In 1981, Frieda Billiet found living material at several sites in French Guiana and introduced it to cultivation at Meise, Belgium. Her work brought the plant to Thomas Croat’s attention. He formally described the species in 1995 and named it for her.

Its native range covers French Guiana, Guyana and Pará in northern Brazil. In rainforest, young plants begin on the ground and then climb closely against tree trunks. The species usually grows at about 140–340 m, although records extend from approximately 5 to 670 m.

• Close climbing contact: Keep the stem near a sturdy vertical surface so its aerial roots can grip. Long hanging leaves and leaf stalks need plenty of surrounding space.
• Light on extended leaves: Strong filtered exposure suits active growth. Increase direct sun slowly and watch newly opened tissue for heat damage.
• Watering the container: Check for light surface dryness before watering completely. Drain the pot without delay.
• Root care, watering and support: Use a coarse mix that retains enough moisture for climbing roots while preserving generous air spaces.

Philodendron billietiae petiole, leaf and stem problems

• Orange petioles: Olive to yellow-orange colour with purplish lines is normal, as is reddish young foliage. Concern begins when a mark becomes soft, water-soaked, constricted or progressively brown.
• Spreading lesions: Separate Billietiae when decay stays wet or advances towards the clustered stem. Prevent splashing and avoid taking cuttings if softness reaches the tightly grouped petiole bases.
• Drooping: Inspect moisture distribution and root firmness. Clear out dead roots and renew mix that has become stale or compacted.
• Pests around the stem tip: Inspect the rolled leaf, petiole bases and aerial-root nodes for attached scale, cottony wax, silver trails, dark deposits or fine webbing. Once the pest is known, treat these sheltered points and the long lower leaf surfaces.
• Sticky residue: A fixed secretion point or marginal droplet can be normal in Philodendron. Search for aphids, soft scale, mealybugs, whiteflies, cast skins and sooty growth before treating the residue as honeydew.
• Contact tears: The very long projecting blades can crease or rub against nearby surfaces. Match a dry scar to its contact point. Stippling, silvering, black specks or webbing call for a pest check beneath the leaf.

Philodendron billietiae is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

Why is it called Philodendron billietiae?

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.” The Latinized epithet billietiae means “of Billiet” and honours Frieda Billiet of the National Botanic Garden of Belgium.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.
