Philodendron ‘Red Anderson’ Variegata

Origin of Philodendron ‘Red Anderson’ Variegata

Philodendron ‘Red Anderson’ Variegata is a variegated, red-stemmed cultivar in horticulture. Its breeder, introduction date and parentage are unknown.

An older non-variegated California plant called ‘Anderson’s Red’ also appears in horticultural history. Its connection to the modern variegated cultivar is unclear.

Caring for Philodendron ‘Red Anderson’ Variegata

• Support: Attach the climbing stem to a textured pole or plank before it sprawls and guide aerial roots toward the surface as each new node forms.
• New-leaf clearance: Leave space between the growing point, support and neighbouring foliage so pale leaves can uncurl without rubbing or folding.
• Light: Use bright filtered light. Cream and white sections scorch readily in harsh direct sun, so screen strong exposure.
• Water and mix: Let part of a coarse, airy mix dry before wetting the full root ball, then let the excess drain.
• Temperature and humidity: Aim to keep the growing area around 18–29 °C. Relocate it from cold sources if temperatures fall towards 15 °C. Aim for 50–60% humidity.
• Feeding: During active stem and leaf growth, use complete houseplant fertiliser at a moderate rate; pause or reduce it when growth slows.
• Repotting: Give ‘Red Anderson’ a new pot once roots are tight or the supported plant has become unstable.
• Propagation: Root a sound node-bearing stem section, choosing one with an aerial root when available.

Philodendron ‘Red Anderson’ Variegata: problems and solutions

• Several consecutive nodes produce all-green leaves: One greener leaf can be normal variation. If the active tip continues fully green and you want to retain variegation, cut the vine back to a healthy node that still shows pale patterning in the stem.
• The growing tip becomes almost entirely cream: Very pale growth has little green tissue to support itself. Keep established green-bearing leaves, avoid heavy pruning, and wait for the shoot to produce a better-balanced leaf before removing useful green foliage.
• The vine wilts although the pot is still wet: Check drainage first and do not add more water. If the vine stays limp after the mix has begun to dry, inspect the root system; cut only clearly rotten, mushy or hollow root sections back to firm tissue with disinfected scissors and discard the decay. Keep every firm root and repot in fresh, airy substrate if the existing mix has broken down.
• White or cream sections turn crisp: Match the damage to its position and recent care. If the exposed side faces strong sun or hot glass, move the plant into gentler filtered light. If the root ball has dried hard, rehydrate it thoroughly and check moisture sooner next time. Clear any point where a pale leaf rubs against the pole or neighbouring foliage. The white-variegated plant guide helps compare these patterns.
• A fresh leaf opens with silver scars and black specks: Inspect the folded blade and petiole base for thrips. If live insects are found, isolate the vine, clean off accessible thrips and apply a treatment currently labelled for thrips on indoor ornamentals, repeating only at the label interval.

Philodendron ‘Red Anderson’ Variegata is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

When was Philodendron first published, and what does it mean?

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.”

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.
