Flattened to three-angled stems, small spiny areoles and orange flowers give Pfeiffera monacantha its sharp-edged hanging cactus look. Native from Bolivia to north-west Argentina, it starts with more upright growth, then develops longer pendent segments as the stems extend.
This cactus suits bright filtered light and an airy root zone. Its natural habitat includes seasonally dry east Andean valleys, Argentine Yungas, and cliff sites, so the roots need oxygen and quick drainage while the stems still benefit from moisture during active growth.
Pfeiffera monacantha is native from Bolivia to north-west Argentina and grows in seasonally dry tropical conditions. It may grow epiphytically or on rock, mainly on cliffs in east Andean valleys or Argentine Yungas, at elevations reported from roughly 300–2000 m.
The stems carry photosynthetic tissue, so healthy stem colour and firmness are the best indicators of plant condition. New growth may begin more angular and upright, then flatten and hang as it matures. A hanging pot or elevated shelf lets this habit develop naturally while keeping the spiny stem margins away from frequent contact.
Pfeiffera monacantha has small but sharp spines and bristly areoles that can irritate skin or paws. Place it where trailing stems will not be brushed against often, and use gloves or folded paper when pruning or repotting.
Pfeiffera monacantha belongs to Cactaceae. The genus Pfeiffera honours Ludwig Karl Georg Pfeiffer. The species epithet monacantha means “one-spined,” referring to areoles that often carry a single prominent spine; older synonym names include Rhipsalis monacantha and Lepismium monacanthum.
Pfeiffera monacantha develops into a pendent cactus with angular stems, small spines and orange flowers on established growth.
