Peperomia clusiifolia ‘Red Margin’

A colourful form of a Jamaican epiphyte

Peperomia clusiifolia is native to Jamaica, where it grows as an epiphyte in wet tropical vegetation. Its fleshy stems and leaves store moisture between rain or drying periods above the forest floor.

‘Red Margin’ is a cultivated selection that carries the species’ thick foliage with a defined red to pink edge.

Care for Peperomia clusiifolia ‘Red Margin’

Bright indirect light and a little mild sun support sturdy, closely spaced growth. Protect the red-to-pink edge from strong afternoon sun, which can scorch the exposed margin. Allow the upper 3–4 cm to dry before watering deeply; the thick leaves tolerate a short delay better than roots that remain wet for days.

• Cut back and root healthy tips: Shorten leggy stems just above a leaf joint to encourage side shoots. Tip cuttings root readily in a lightly moist airy mix.
• Support the heavier branching growth: Use a stable pot with bark, coco chips and perlite or pumice around a smaller portion of fine potting mix. Maintain 18–28 °C and keep the plant away from cold glass and heating blasts.
• Feed lightly and keep the new pot snug: Use a dilute balanced feed while new stems and leaves are extending, then pause when growth slows. Repot when roots circle the container, keep the original planting depth and avoid an oversized pot.

Troubleshooting Peperomia clusiifolia ‘Red Margin’

Lower leaves are yellowing and the stems feel soft: The roots may be remaining saturated. Remove rotted tissue, change to a chunkier mix and water only after the upper part of the pot has dried.

Brown patches are forming along the coloured edge: Strong sun, hot glass or mineral build-up can damage the coloured margin first. Reduce harsh exposure, run clean water through the pot and avoid heavy feeding.

• The plant has long bare stems: Low light or missed pruning can leave older growth open. Increase filtered light and cut above healthy leaf joints to encourage branching; healthy tips can be rooted.
• New growth is thin and the gaps between leaves are widening: The plant may need stronger filtered light. Increase brightness gradually and prune very leggy stems only after sturdier growth begins.
• Mealybugs or scale are sitting on the stems: Isolate the plant and clean the branching points and leaf bases carefully. Repeat treatment and inspect nearby plants because pests can hide among touching stems.

About the name Peperomia clusiifolia

Peperomia combines Greek peperi, “pepper”, with homoios, “resembling”, and means “pepper-like”. The species name clusiifolia means “with leaves like Clusia”.

Hipólito Ruiz López and José Antonio Pavon established the genus Peperomia in 1794 in Flora Peruvianae et Chilensis Prodromus, page 8.

Nicolaus Joseph von Jacquin first described it as Piper clusiifolium in 1791 in Collectanea, volume 3, page 209. William Jackson Hooker later placed it in Peperomia as Peperomia clusiifolia in 1829 in Botanical Magazine, volume 56, plate 2943.
