Background of Peperomia clusiifolia ‘Red Margin’

‘Red Margin’ is a cultivated form of Peperomia clusiifolia. Red-edged leaves also occur naturally in the species.

Peperomia clusiifolia is native to Jamaica, where it grows on trees in wet tropical forest. Its roots sit in loose organic matter, while the thick leaves and fleshy stems store water.

Keeping ‘Red Margin’ healthy indoors

• Light: Set ‘Red Margin’ where it gets plenty of filtered light. After the plant has gradually adjusted to some direct sun, mild sun early or late in the day can deepen the coloured edge. Strong midday rays can bleach or scorch the leaves.
• Water: Let the upper 3–4 cm of potting mix dry and check that the pot feels lighter, then water thoroughly and let excess drain.
• Temperature: Temperatures around 18–30 °C suit it. Keep it in a warm, stable position away from cold windows and draughts.
• Potting mix: Use a coarse, airy mix that drains promptly while still holding some moisture. Bark and perlite or pumice are useful additions to fine houseplant compost.
• Humidity: Average indoor humidity is suitable. If the air is very dry, raise humidity around the plant while keeping the usual watering rhythm.
• Feeding: While the plant is growing, feed lightly with a balanced houseplant fertiliser, following the label.
• Pruning: If the plant starts to look sparse, cut long stems back just above a node so new side shoots can form below the cut.
• Repotting: Move into a slightly larger pot only when roots are crowded or the mix has broken down. An oversized pot increases the risk of slow drying.
• Propagation: Healthy stem pieces removed during pruning can be rooted as cuttings, as long as each section includes a node.

Troubleshooting ‘Red Margin’

• The red edge becomes faint: Move the plant to brighter filtered light and look at the colour of the next new leaves. Colour changes are easiest to see on new leaves after the light improves.
• Brown marks develop along the leaf edge: Check for harsh direct sun first. If the light is already gentle, check the potting mix. A long dry spell or fertiliser salt build-up can also brown the leaf edge.
• Leaves turn yellow: The mix may be staying wet too long. Let it dry further before watering again. If the stems are also soft, check the roots for damage and use a looser mix if the current one stays wet for too long.
• Stems become long and bare: Increase indirect light and trim back the most stretched stems above a healthy node to encourage new branches.
• White cottony clusters appear: Check stem joints, leaf stalks and leaf undersides for mealybugs. Isolate the plant, remove visible insects and use a houseplant treatment labelled for mealybugs, repeating it at the interval on the product label.

About the name Peperomia clusiifolia

Peperomia combines Greek peperi, “pepper”, with homoios, “resembling”, and means “pepper-like”. The species name clusiifolia means “with leaves like Clusia”.

Hipólito Ruiz López and José Antonio Pavon established the genus Peperomia in 1794 in Flora Peruvianae et Chilensis Prodromus, page 8.

Nicolaus Joseph von Jacquin first described it as Piper clusiifolium in 1791 in Collectanea, volume 3, page 209. William Jackson Hooker later placed it in Peperomia as Peperomia clusiifolia in 1829 in Botanical Magazine, volume 56, plate 2943.
