Peperomia caperata 'Caracas' is a compact ripple peperomia with densely corrugated leaves and a low clumping habit. The leaves are heart-shaped, deeply puckered between the veins and held close together, so the plant forms a textured mound rather than long stems. Depending on maturity and growing conditions, the foliage can show green, bronze and burgundy tones.
This is a small plant with a lot of surface detail. The leaf grooves create shadow, the petioles hold the foliage close to the centre, and new leaves emerge tightly before opening into the rippled texture. Indoors, it stays best in a snug pot where the root zone can dry evenly.
Peperomia caperata is native to south-eastern Brazil and grows in wet tropical conditions. Indoors, it needs warmth, filtered light, gentle moisture and steady air movement, while the fine roots stay healthier in an open substrate than in heavy soil.
'Caracas' can look full above the pot while still having a modest root ball below. A loose substrate and careful watering help the plant keep its dense mound without the lower stems softening at the base.
Peperomia caperata is widely grown as a non-toxic houseplant for homes with pets. Repeated chewing can still upset a sensitive stomach, so damaged leaves should be removed and curious pets kept away.
Peperomia is part of Piperaceae, the pepper family. The species epithet caperata means wrinkled, which directly matches the deeply rippled leaf surface of this group.
Peperomia caperata 'Caracas' stays low and textured, with dark rippled leaves held close over a small root system.
