Peperomia caperata 'Burbella' is a striking cultivar introduced in 2014 by breeder Obed Jacob Smit as part of the Eden Collection. Registered under the code ‘EC-PEPE-1904’, it arose from a cross between two unnamed P. caperata parents. Compact and refined, this ripple peperomia stands out with its bullate, dark-green foliage coated in a silvery metallic shimmer.
This cultivar grows low and bushy, usually staying under 15 cm tall. The heart-shaped leaves are thick, deeply ridged, and blistered, giving them an almost sculpted texture. The upper surface combines deep green tones with a reflective silver sheen, creating a dramatic, two-tone effect. Slender greenish flower spikes may appear, but foliage remains the main feature.
'Burbella' was bred by Dutch horticulturist Obed Jacob Smit in 2014, selected for its unusual leaf texture and metallic finish. Introduced under the Eden Collection, it quickly gained attention among collectors for its compact size and bold foliage character. The code ‘EC-PEPE-1904’ refers to its official cultivar registration.
Overwatering is the most common cause of damage, leading to soft stems or root rot. In low light, the metallic sheen may fade. Leaves curling or crisping usually indicate underwatering or very dry air.
Thanks to its compact form and dramatic leaf texture, 'Burbella' is a favorite among ripple peperomia cultivars. It thrives in small pots and looks impressive when grouped with lighter-toned plants to highlight its silver contrast.
The genus name Peperomia was coined by Spanish botanists Hipólito Ruiz López and José Antonio Pavón Jiménez in 1794 after their expeditions in Peru and Chile. It comes from Greek peperi (“pepper”) and homoios (“resembling”), referring to its relationship with black pepper (Piper nigrum). The epithet caperata means “wrinkled,” describing the deeply ridged leaf surface.
With its shimmering foliage and compact growth, Peperomia caperata 'Burbella' is a must-have ripple peperomia for collectors and beginners alike. Order yours today and enjoy this striking, easy-care houseplant.
