A strong climbing stem carries large leaves close together, each hanging from a long stalk. Mature leaves can reach about 78 × 43 cm, yet remain fairly thin and slightly puckered rather than thick and rigid.
Small openings gather beside the central vein and much larger ones extend towards the edge, leaving broad green ribs between them. Near the top of each leaf stalk, a short sleeve-like sheath remains visible as part of the plant’s sturdy climbing structure.
