Monstera dubia

Natural range and habitat of Monstera dubia

Monstera dubia occurs naturally from southeastern Mexico through Central America into tropical South America and Trinidad. It is a wet-tropical climber found across humid forest habitats.

Juvenile stems grow tightly against trunks or other vertical surfaces with flattened, overlapping leaves. Established adult shoots can stand farther from the support as the foliage becomes much larger and greener.

Growing Monstera dubia indoors

Use a broad board, bark slab or similar flat surface for the juvenile shingling stage. Guide the stem so the nodes can attach, but leave the growing tip free to continue upward.

Keep the root zone in a loose, aerated mix and water when the surface has begun to dry. Mounted or shallow-rooted growth can lose moisture quickly, so avoid repeated full dry-outs. Bright filtered light and steady warmth support compact attached growth.

Water the root zone directly and keep the shingled leaves from staying wet. Moisture trapped for long periods between a flat leaf and its support can mark the tissue, so good airflow around the mounted vine matters.

Troubleshooting Monstera dubia

• A runner produces tiny leaves and no shingling: it may simply be searching for another surface. Guide it onto a broad support and give the nodes time to attach before judging the leaf size.
• Soft marks develop behind flat leaves: water can remain trapped between the leaf and its support. Keep the foliage drier, improve airflow and direct most watering to the root zone.
• Yellowing or wilt continues while the mix is wet: The root zone may be staying saturated. Let the container drain fully and check the root system if decline carries on. Preserve firm roots and trim only areas that have become completely soft or hollow. The root rot guide explains the next steps.
• Pests: Silver scars with black specks point to thrips; fixed bumps or sticky honeydew can indicate scale, while cottony clusters or sticky honeydew can indicate mealybugs. Isolate the plant and inspect sheltered areas, behind the leaves and around the nodes. Remove visible pests or heavily affected material where practical, then apply a treatment labelled for the confirmed pest behind the leaves, around the nodes and in the sheltered areas where it was found. Repeat it at the intervals stated on the label for the full course.

Monstera dubia is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

Why is it called Monstera dubia?

Monstera comes from Latin monstrum or monstrosus, words for something unusual or abnormally formed, referring to the striking holes and divisions in the leaves. The epithet dubia means doubtful; the species was first described from sterile juvenile material that was difficult to place.

Michel Adanson established the genus Monstera in 1763 in Familles des plantes, volume 2, page 470.

Karl Sigismund Kunth first described it as Marcgravia dubia in 1825 in Nova Genera et Species Plantarum, volume 7, page 212. Heinrich Gustav Adolf Engler and Kurt Krause later placed it in Monstera as Monstera dubia in 1908 in Das Pflanzenreich, IV, 23B, page 117.
