The curls of ‘Spiralis’ are cylindrical green stems that carry out the work normally associated with leaves. Some form tight coils, others make broad loops, and occasional straighter shoots give the tuft its characteristic irregular shape. New stems rise from the base and steadily thicken the clump.
Small brownish-green flower clusters appear on the side of certain stems. The section that seems to continue above a cluster is an upright bract, an arrangement that makes the flowers look as though they have emerged halfway along a corkscrew shoot.
