A cultivated variegate with Philippine roots

Hoya wayetii ‘Tricolor’ is a striped horticultural form maintained through stem propagation. Its cream, yellow and pink pattern is horticultural, while its wild background belongs to the green species Hoya wayetii.

Hoya wayetii occurs in the mountain forests of Benguet, Zambales and Davao Oriental. It is endemic to the Philippines, where the 2026 threatened-plant order gives the species national Endangered status. The variegated clone represents cultivated material and is not a separate wild population.

Household conditions for epiphytic vine care

• Light: Use a bright position with filtered light so new growth stays compact and develops its pink colouring. Acclimate carefully because cream and yellow sectors overheat and scorch more readily than green tissue.
• Water: Allow the substrate to dry through most of the pot. When the container is light, water thoroughly and let all excess water drain away.
• Temperature and humidity: During active growth, provide steady indoor warmth, moderate humidity and steady air movement. Keep it frost-free and protect it from stagnant saturated air and cold wet roots.
• Growth and flowers: Trail the stems or guide them around a support. Allow the slower variegated stems to mature before expecting flowers, then keep the plant’s position and watering steady while buds form.
• Propagation: Select a striped shoot whose growing tip contains a balanced mix of green and pale tissue, then retain a healthy node beneath it. Place the selected node into an airy bark-based propagation medium, or use water with just the selected node immersed.

Problems and solutions for Hoya wayetii ‘Tricolor’

• Pink, cream or green shoots: Pink new leaves and cream or yellow sectors are normal. Green reversions can outgrow the striped vine and may be removed at their origin. Entirely cream shoots cannot sustain vigorous independent growth and should not be used alone for propagation.
• Wrinkling with damp or dry roots: Inspect the mix and roots before adding water. If the mix is dry and the roots are healthy, soak it thoroughly. If the pot remains damp and the roots are soft and dark, remove the damaged roots. Use fresh, coarse mix in a pot that drains freely. If softness begins at the stem base while the mix is wet, remove decayed tissue and restart a healthy striped node if needed.
• Pests in narrow folded leaves: Mealybugs, scale, thrips and mites can hide in the folds and at nodes. Cottony wax, sticky residue, fixed bumps, silvery scars, fine speckling or twisted tips indicate pests. Move the plant away from others, remove visible insects and apply a suitable treatment inside the folds. Check these hiding places again as young pests emerge. Sticky foliage with a wipeable black layer has sooty mould growing on scale or mealybug honeydew.
• Brown pale sections: Variegated tissue overheats and dehydrates sooner than green tissue. Reduce harsh direct sun, avoid long bone-dry periods and keep fertiliser modest. Existing brown areas are permanent, so judge recovery from new growth.

Hoya wayetii 'Tricolor' is not confirmed safe for people or pets

• Its toxicity to humans, cats and dogs has not been reliably established.
• There is not enough dependable safety information to identify a toxin or confirm that this exact plant is non-toxic.

Hoya wayetii: where the name comes from

Hoya honours the English gardener Thomas Hoy. Wayetii honours Maximo Wayet, who collected the type material in the Philippines.
