Hoya verticillata (Nganjuk Splash form)

Origin of Hoya verticillata (Nganjuk Splash form)

Hoya verticillata (Nganjuk Splash form) comes from Nganjuk in East Java.

Hoya verticillata occurs from the Indian subcontinent through southern China to western and central Malesia.

Care for Hoya verticillata (Nganjuk Splash form)

This Hoya needs bright filtered light for compact growth, with protection from concentrated midday sun on the heavily silvered leaves.

Maintain stable warm room conditions around the elongated silvered leaves and protect them from sudden temperature changes. Maintain an ambient level of roughly 50–60%.

Check the mix beneath the surface and water after the pot becomes lighter. Let the entire root ball drain; silver markings do not indicate how much moisture remains.

Temperature: Growth is well suited to 16–24 °C. Avoid keeping it below 10 °C for long.

Use bark and coarse mineral particles with a small moisture-retaining component. Feed lightly while new leaves are forming, and repot into fresh mix only after the roots crowd the current container.

Train fresh shoots around a hoop with wider gaps between turns so the long leaves are not trapped or folded. Move only stems that are still pliable.

For a new Hoya verticillata (Nganjuk Splash form), take a healthy node-bearing stem cutting and keep it warm until roots have formed.

Troubleshooting Hoya verticillata (Nganjuk Splash form)

Silvered areas turn tan

Heavy splash can mark under hot direct sun or after an extreme dry interval. Soften the light and restore even rewetting. New leaves should retain their silver without developing tan damage.

Growing tips repeatedly dry back

Uneven rewetting, a long dry spell or damaged roots can stop a tender tip on the plant. Check that the whole root ball wets and drains evenly, then trim the dead end back to firm tissue.

New shoots crowd one side of the support

Spread the youngest shoots into open sections of the frame. Avoid untangling mature stems beneath heavy leaves.

Hoya verticillata (Nganjuk Splash form) is non-toxic to people and pets

• This plant is non-toxic to people, cats and dogs.
• Chewing a large amount can still cause an upset stomach.
• If a large amount is eaten and symptoms continue, contact a veterinarian or medical professional.

The meaning and history of Hoya verticillata

Hoya honours the English gardener Thomas Hoy. Verticillata means whorled.

Robert Brown established the genus Hoya in 1810 in Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae, page 459.

Martin Vahl first described it as Sperlingia verticillata in 1810 in Skrifter af Naturhistorie-Selskabet, volume 6, page 113. George Don later placed it in Hoya as Hoya verticillata in 1837 in A General History of the Dichlamydeous Plants, volume 4, page 128.
