Hoya crassipetiolata is a Vietnamese wax plant with slender twining stems, firm green leaves and unusually thick leaf stalks. The leaves are fleshy-coriaceous, often rhomboid to elliptic, with a distinct midrib and branching side veins that give each blade a clearly marked surface. As the vine matures, aerial roots can form along the stems, allowing it to climb a support or settle into a trailing shape from a hanging pot.
The petioles are the feature that makes this species especially recognisable. They are thick, curved or twisted, sometimes wider than the stem itself, and they hold the leaves at a defined angle along the vine. Mature plants can produce umbels of small waxy flowers in white, greenish or pink-tinged tones, usually from persistent peduncles that should stay on the plant after flowering.
Hoya crassipetiolata is native to Vietnam, where it has been recorded from wet tropical habitats including evergreen broad-leaved forest, limestone slopes, rocky cliffs and lowland coastal forest sites. Records place it from near sea level to higher forest elevations, so the plant is best understood as a moisture-loving Hoya that still depends on excellent root aeration.
In a pot, the plant needs moisture followed by air around the roots after watering. A chunky substrate, warm conditions and gentle airflow reduce the risk of a wet, stagnant root zone while the stems continue to extend.
Hoya crassipetiolata produces milky latex when cut. The sap can irritate sensitive skin or eyes, so wash hands after pruning and keep fresh cuttings away from children and pets that chew plants.
Hoya crassipetiolata belongs to Apocynaceae and was described by Aver., V.T.Pham & T.A.Le in 2017. The species name refers to the remarkably thick petiole, while Hoya honours Thomas Hoy, an English gardener connected with the early history of the genus.
Hoya crassipetiolata has thick curved petioles, veined leathery leaves and long twining growth.
