Naming and horticultural background

The name ‘Chelsea’ was in horticultural use by around 2008. The cultivar name Hoya carnosa ‘Chelsea’ was published in 2024. Its originator remains uncertain, although Chuck Ebersole is reported to have chosen the name for his daughter.

Caring for the cupped leaves and climbing stems

‘Chelsea’ can trail or grow on a hoop or trellis. Give it bright indirect light, sheltered from hot sun, at about 18–27°C and 40–60% relative humidity. Keep it above about 13°C, with air moving gently around the cupped foliage.

Use chunky potting mix in a container with drainage holes. Water when the pot feels light and the mix is nearly dry throughout; check moisture deeper in the mix before soaking and draining the roots. Lower light, cooler conditions and slower growth mean longer drying times.

Apply a light balanced orchid feed about every two weeks while new growth develops, following the label. Pause when growth stops and flush with plain water every few months. When roots fill the pot, move the plant into the next pot size. If only the mix has degraded, replace it in the same-sized pot. Check for fertiliser in the fresh compost before feeding again, following the compost’s feeding instructions.

A one- or two-node cutting can root in lightly moist propagation mix. Use a clean blade and wear gloves, as the sap can irritate skin. Remove lower leaves and keep the rest above the mix. Provide warmth, indirect light and humid air with ventilation. Hold any cover off the foliage. Once rooted, move the cutting into a pot.

When cupped leaves lose firmness or show insects

• Cupped leaves become soft or start to shrivel: ‘Chelsea’ naturally has cupped, dimpled leaves that feel firm when healthy. Check whether the mix around the roots is dry. If the root ball is dry, water thoroughly and drain. If the leaves still wilt after watering, inspect the roots. Avoid repeated watering while the roots are still wet.
• Wilting while the mix remains wet: Persistent wetness can damage roots. Drain trapped water and inspect roots if decline continues. If you find a small amount of root rot, use a clean, disinfected tool to cut the soft roots back to firm, healthy tissue. Throw away the rotten roots and old mix. Repot in fresh, airy mix, using a clean pot just large enough for the roots that remain. The pot must have drainage holes. If decay is widespread, save only healthy stem cuttings. Discard the plant if no healthy stems remain, and disinfect your tools afterwards.
• Cottony insects around leaf bases: Confirm mealybugs beneath the wax and isolate the plant. Remove visible insects with a damp swab or tweezers. Inspect sheltered leaf joints, stems, the pot and any support weekly, removing any mealybugs you find until none remain. If mealybugs persist, use a product approved for home use against mealybugs on indoor ornamental plants in your country.
