Hoya burtoniae is an accepted Hoya species from Luzon in the Philippines, where it is recorded as a climbing epiphyte or lithophyte in wet tropical habitat. Indoors it is grown for small, slightly succulent leaves, fine vining stems and warm colour shifts under strong filtered light.
The leaves are usually oval to almond-shaped and can feel softly textured depending on the clone. Stems may trail from a pot or climb lightly when guided, giving the plant enough flexibility for shelves, hanging planters or a small trellis.
In its native range, Hoya burtoniae grows in wet tropical conditions as a climber on trees or rock surfaces. In a pot, the roots need moisture followed by oxygen, with a substrate that drains before the stem base sits wet.
Indoor plants often produce long exploratory shoots before filling in with leaves. A small hoop or trellis gives the vines direction, while a hanging pot lets the stems layer naturally as the plant matures.
Hoya burtoniae is grown as an ornamental plant. Leaves and flowers should not be eaten, and pruned material should stay away from pets and children. Handle fresh sap carefully if your skin is sensitive.
Hoya burtoniae Kloppenb. belongs to the Apocynaceae family and was first published in 1990. The genus Hoya honours Thomas Hoy; the species is accepted from Luzon in the Philippines, where it grows as a climbing epiphyte or lithophyte in wet tropical habitat.
Hoya burtoniae grows into a small trailing or lightly climbing vine with textured leaves that colour warmly in bright filtered light.
