Heptapleurum (Schefflera) arboricola 'Melanie'
Heptapleurum arboricola 'Melanie' has dark green umbrella leaves heavily splashed with cream and yellow. Mature leaves commonly have eight oval leaflets, and the strong pale markings make each leaf cluster look bright and varied.
The plant grows from upright woody stems and usually remains under 1 m indoors. Because the leaves carry so much pale tissue, weak light quickly leads to thinner stems and looser growth.
Cream-yellow splashes on leathery umbrella leaves

'Melanie' needs bright indirect light to keep the variegated growth firm. Direct midday sun can mark the cream-yellow sections, while weak light makes the stems stretch.
Care for pale, heavily marked leaves
- Light: Bright indirect light keeps the heavily variegated leaves stronger. Shield pale leaf sections from direct midday sun.
- Watering and substrate: Let the upper part of the substrate dry before watering again. Use a loose, oxygen-rich mix that drains properly.
- Temperature: Keep warm, around 18–27 °C.
- Humidity and airflow: Normal indoor humidity is usually fine. Avoid dry heat blowing directly across the foliage.
- Feeding: Use light fertiliser while the plant is making new leaves.
- Pruning: Shorten long stems above nodes to keep the plant compact.
- Repotting: Repot when roots have filled the pot.
- Outdoor summer: Warm bright shade only, with protection from midday sun.
Pale-tissue scorch and loose growth
- Scorched pale areas: Direct sun is too strong for the cream-yellow tissue.
- Dropping leaves: Transport, cold drafts, wet roots or a dried root ball can trigger shedding.
- Yellowing leaves: The lower mix may be staying wet.
- Pests: Spider mites, mealybugs and scale can hide in leaf joints, stems and petioles.
- Weak stems: Light is too low.
- Open structure: Older stems need pruning when the plant becomes sparse.
Pets and fresh cuts
Keep 'Melanie' out of reach of pets that chew foliage. Chewed leaves can irritate the mouth and throat, and fresh sap may irritate sensitive skin.
