Heptapleurum arboricola 'Melanie' has dark green umbrella leaves heavily splashed with cream and yellow. Mature leaves commonly have eight oval leaflets, and the strong pale markings make each leaf cluster look bright and varied.
The plant grows from upright woody stems and usually remains under 1 m indoors. Because the leaves carry so much pale tissue, weak light quickly leads to thinner stems and looser growth.
Heptapleurum arboricola comes from humid forest and stream-bank habitats in Hainan and Taiwan. Its roots are adapted to moisture with air around them, so dense wet substrate can stress the plant indoors.
'Melanie' needs bright indirect light to keep the variegated growth firm. Direct midday sun can mark the cream-yellow sections, while weak light makes the stems stretch.
Keep 'Melanie' out of reach of pets that chew foliage. Chewed leaves can irritate the mouth and throat, and fresh sap may irritate sensitive skin.
