Homalomena rubescens ‘Emerald Gem’ is a fast-growing and robust cultivar of Homalomena rubescens Kunth, widely admired for its glossy, emerald-green foliage. Unlike many other cultivars of this species, which have red stems, ‘Emerald Gem’ produces green petioles that highlight the rich leaf colour. Its spade-shaped leaves are ribbed with elegant ridges that fan outward, giving the plant a refined architectural look. Easy to grow and prolific in habit, it’s a striking yet resilient choice for houseplant enthusiasts.
Homalomena rubescens is native to Southeast Asia, where it grows as a terrestrial herb in shaded, humid forest floors. The cultivar ‘Emerald Gem’ was selected for its glossy emerald foliage and distinctive green stems, giving it a unique position among rubescens cultivars. Its resilience and ornamental value have made it popular as both a collector’s specimen and a beginner-friendly houseplant.
'Emerald Gem' grows quickly in cultivation, producing lush clumps of glossy leaves. Its vibrant green tones and unusual stem colour make it ideal for brightening darker corners or adding contrast to mixed foliage displays. Given stable conditions, it will maintain its architectural form year-round.
The genus name Homalomena comes from the Greek words homalos (“flat”) and mene (“moon”), a reference to the rounded or moon-shaped leaves of some species within the genus.
With its emerald foliage, green stems, and vigorous growth habit, Homalomena rubescens 'Emerald Gem' is both a showy and resilient houseplant. Order today and bring its glossy, spade-shaped leaves into your home display.
