Heptapleurum actinophyllum 'Amate' grows much larger than compact dwarf umbrella plants. It has broad glossy leaf clusters held on long petioles, with several leathery green leaflets spreading out in a wide radial shape. In a warm, bright room with enough root space, 'Amate' can become a tall indoor tree of around 300 cm.
Young plants are upright and leafy. As the stems mature, they harden into a woody frame and the canopy rises, so the plant starts to look more like a small indoor tree than a bushy shrub. Light pruning keeps the upper growth fuller and stops older stems from becoming bare lower down.
Heptapleurum actinophyllum grows in tropical northern Australia and southern New Guinea, where it develops as a scrambling tree in warm, wet forest conditions. Indoors, 'Amate' keeps that upright energy and needs space around the broad canopy.
After watering, the substrate should drain freely. Dense soil that stays wet for days damages the roots quickly, especially in cooler rooms. If older stems become too tall or bare, cut above a leaf node while the plant is making new leaves.
Keep 'Amate' away from pets and children who chew foliage. Leaves and stems can irritate the mouth and digestive tract if eaten, and fresh sap may irritate sensitive skin after pruning.
