Howea forsteriana, known as Kentia palm, is a slow-growing palm with long arching fronds and narrow dark green leaflets. Indoor pots often contain several young palms growing together, with fronds rising at different heights. Each young palm grows from its own single stem.
Kentia palm grows slowly indoors. New fronds appear gradually, and the roots dislike rough handling. Stable watering, a settled position and infrequent repotting keep the plant looking better over time.
Howea forsteriana is native to Lord Howe Island. Outdoor plants can form tall trunks, while container plants remain much slower and more compact. Indoors, the fronds need room to arch without being bent against walls, furniture or walkways.
Rotate the pot occasionally for even frond growth. Remove fully brown fronds at the base, but leave healthy green fronds in place. Palms rely on those leaves while new growth develops slowly.
Kentia palm is non-toxic to cats and dogs. Chewing large amounts of foliage can still cause digestive upset, and the long fronds can tear in high-traffic spots.
Howea refers to Lord Howe Island. The species name forsteriana honours William Forster. Kentia palm is the common name.
