Homalomena rubescens ‘Maggy’ is a broad-leaved aroid with glossy green leaves on reddish leaf stalks, also called petioles. New leaves rise from the centre and build a compact upright clump.
This plant reacts quickly when the roots stay cold, dry out completely or sit in dense wet substrate. Warmth, lightly moist roots and an airy mix keep the petioles firmer and reduce sticking or tearing on new leaves.
Homalomena rubescens is native from the eastern Himalayan region into Myanmar, where it grows in warm, humid forest conditions. Indoors, it widens gradually from the base and needs steady warmth around the roots.
Remove fully yellowed or damaged leaves close to the base. Dust the glossy leaves gently and inspect the petiole bases at the same time, as pests can stay hidden there.
As an aroid, Homalomena rubescens ‘Maggy’ contains calcium oxalate crystals that irritate the mouth and throat if eaten. Fresh sap can irritate sensitive skin. Keep it away from pets and children, and wash hands after cutting or repotting.
The species name rubescens means becoming reddish, matching the red tones in the petioles. ‘Maggy’ is the cultivar name.
