Goeppertia (Calathea) rufibarba 'Wavestar' is a narrow-leaved cultivar of the furry feather calathea, grown for slim light-green blades, softly rippled margins and the fine hairy texture typical of the species. It keeps the warm underside tones and tactile petioles of Goeppertia rufibarba, while the slimmer leaves give the plant a light, vertical outline in a pot.
Growth starts from a rhizomatous base. New leaves rise on slender petioles, then angle outward as the clump fills. Mature 'Wavestar' plants can reach around 60 cm tall, giving this cultivar a full prayer-plant effect in a manageable indoor size.
'Wavestar' follows the biology of Goeppertia rufibarba: it is a clumping, rhizomatous prayer plant with fine roots and herbaceous leaves held individually on petioles. The rhizome stores energy and produces new growing points, giving a healthy plant its fullness from the centre of the pot.
The parent species is native to Bahia in Brazil and grows in wet tropical conditions below canopy cover. Indoors, that habitat background translates into filtered light, warm temperatures, consistent moisture and humidity high enough to protect the slim leaf edges. The narrow leaf shape means dryness can show quickly as curled margins or crisp tips.
The fine hairs on the petioles and leaf undersides are a normal species trait. They should stay soft and dry to the touch. Sticky residue, webbing or silvery scarring should be treated as a pest clue, especially because the undersides can hide early spider mite or thrips damage.
New 'Wavestar' leaves may emerge rolled and lighter before hardening. Let them open naturally, as the slim blades can crease if handled too early. A stable moisture rhythm helps new leaves expand cleanly.
A fuller plant usually looks better than several small divisions. If growth slows, refresh the potting mix first and divide only when the plant has enough shoots to recover strongly. After repotting, warmth and even moisture are more important than fertiliser.
Calathea species are listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs. The long moving leaves can still attract chewing pets, so place Goeppertia (Calathea) rufibarba 'Wavestar' where repeated leaf damage is unlikely.
Goeppertia is a Marantaceae genus named for Johann Heinrich Robert Göppert, a German botanist and palaeobotanist. The species epithet rufibarba means “red beard” and refers to the reddish hairs on the petioles, midribs and leaf undersides. Calathea rufibarba is the older synonym still found with this species. 'Wavestar' has narrower, light green leaves and the soft rufibarba texture.
Goeppertia rufibarba 'Wavestar' carries the rufibarba texture on slimmer waved leaves, with fine petiole hairs and a lighter vertical outline.
