Ficus benghalensis ‘Sunshine’

Cultivated form and natural range of Ficus benghalensis ‘Sunshine’

‘Sunshine’ is a pale-veined cultivated form of Ficus benghalensis, a banyan from the Indian subcontinent. In the wild, the species grows into a large woody tree in warm climates with a dry season.

Care for pale-veined banyan growth

• Light for fresh foliage: Keep ‘Sunshine’ in strong filtered light near a window. Increase direct sun gradually, especially while newly opened leaves are still soft.
• Water: Water thoroughly when the surface has dried and the container feels lighter. Empty any water that collects in the outer pot.
• Room conditions: Keep the plant warm with moderate humidity, away from cold draughts and intense dry heat.
• Feeding: Apply a balanced foliage fertiliser at the label rate while pale new leaves and shoots are developing. Pause when growth stops.
• Potting mix: Choose a loose blend with bark and perlite or pumice so the mix stays slightly moist after watering and excess water drains freely.
• Pruning and propagation: Prune just above a leaf to encourage branching or shorten an overlong shoot. Take cuttings from stems as they begin to turn woody. You can also air-layer a thicker branch. Wear gloves because the milky sap can irritate skin.
• Support and repotting: Use a stake for a young or freshly repotted plant that leans. Move to a slightly larger pot when the roots are densely packed or the old mix has compacted; use a heavier cover pot for stability while the roots still have room in the current pot.

Problems and solutions for Ficus benghalensis ‘Sunshine’

• Fresh foliage develops dry tan marks: New leaves may have received stronger sun than before, or the root ball may have dried out too much. Reduce the hottest exposure, rewater thoroughly if needed and increase direct sun in smaller steps.
• New shoots stretch and the leaves keep getting smaller: Low light is a common cause. Move ‘Sunshine’ closer to a bright window and watch the next few leaves for stronger growth.
• Leaves droop or yellow while the container stays wet: Check the roots before adding more water. Cut any soft dark roots back to firm healthy tissue with a clean tool, cleaning it between cuts. Discard the rot and replant the healthy roots in fresh free-draining mix.
• Tiny pale speckles, cottony clusters, fine webbing or hard brown bumps appear: Look for spider mites, mealybugs or scale. Isolate the plant while you identify the pest, then use a treatment labelled for that pest on indoor ornamental plants and repeat it as directed on the label.

Ficus benghalensis ‘Sunshine’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs, and avoid contact with its milky sap.
• The latex contains ficin and psoralens, which can irritate the mouth, digestive tract, skin and eyes.
• Exposure may cause mouth irritation, drooling, vomiting, stomach pain or a skin rash. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional if symptoms develop or persist.

Where does the name Ficus benghalensis come from?

Classical Latin ficus means fig. Benghalensis means ‘from Bengal’.
