Euphorbia avasmontana is a spiny succulent shrub from southern Africa with clustered, columnar stems and a dryland growth habit. Its stems rise from the base, usually with clear ribs, paired spines and a segmented look that becomes more pronounced as the plant matures.
In a pot, this species develops as a smaller version of its natural shrubby habit. Its shape comes from green to grey-green columns, rib edges armed with spines and repeated basal shoots that gradually build a tighter clump. In containers it needs very bright placement, dry-leaning care, root aeration and fast drainage.
Euphorbia avasmontana grows naturally in desert or dry shrubland conditions, including arid, rocky habitats where rainfall is limited and drainage is fast. Its shrubby, many-stemmed habit builds a clump over time, while the succulent stems store water through dry periods.
The ribbed stems are the plant’s most visible feature. Leaves are absent or very short-lived in normal cultivation, so the plant’s condition shows through firm stems, clean growing tips and stable colour. A mineral substrate, careful watering and strong light keep that stem growth firm and compact.
Euphorbia avasmontana has sharp spines and irritating white latex. Keep the plant away from children and pets that may touch or chew the stems, wear gloves when repotting or cutting and avoid contact between sap and eyes, mouth or broken skin. If sap touches skin, wash it off promptly; if it reaches the eyes, rinse with clean water and seek medical advice.
Euphorbia avasmontana belongs to Euphorbiaceae and was first published by Kurt Dinter in 1928. The genus name Euphorbia is traditionally linked to Euphorbus, physician to King Juba II. The species is recorded from Namibia to South Africa’s Northern Cape Province and is associated with desert or dry shrubland habitats.
Euphorbia avasmontana develops clustered ribbed stems with paired spines and a compact southern African dryland habit.
