Where 'N'Joy' came from

'N'Joy' was selected by breeder Ashish Hansoti near Mumbai, India, in 2002 after a natural mutation appeared on a plant descended from 'Marble Queen'.

It was kept for its smaller broad leaves, close growth and clearly defined green-and-white pattern.

Care for 'N'Joy'

• Light: Use a bright spot with filtered light so the plant keeps its compact growth and clear variegation.
• Water: Water once the upper part of the mix has started to dry and the pot feels noticeably lighter.
• Potting mix: Use a loose, well-drained mix that does not leave the roots sitting wet.
• Temperature: Keep it warm and away from cold draughts or chilled glass.
• Humidity: Average household humidity is usually enough; very high humidity is unnecessary.
• Pruning and support: Pinch or shorten long stems to keep the pot full. Use a small pole if you want the plant to climb.
• Feeding, repotting and propagation: Feed lightly in the active season and pause when winter growth slows. Repot only when roots need more space, and take node cuttings from clearly variegated sections.

What can go wrong with 'N'Joy'

• Cream edges becoming dry and brown: Check direct sun exposure and whether the mix is drying abruptly between waterings.
• Several new leaves lose the crisp white pattern: A single greener leaf is not enough to judge, but a continuing sequence of mostly green leaves suggests that shoot is reverting. Cut it back to the most recent node that was still producing the characteristic white-and-green N'Joy pattern if you want to keep the cultivar's usual look.
• Soft yellow leaves while the pot remains damp: Pause watering, check the drainage and inspect the roots if the plant starts to wilt or soften.
• Black specks with pale scarring on new leaves: Look for thrips, isolate the plant and use a product labelled for thrips on ornamental houseplants, repeating only at the interval stated on the label.

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

Who first published the name Epipremnum aureum?

Epipremnum combines Greek epi, meaning upon, with premnon, meaning tree trunk, referring to the way the vine attaches to a support.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Epipremnum in 1857 in Bonplandia (Hannover), volume 5, page 45.

Jean Jules Linden and Édouard-François André first described it as Pothos aureus in 1880 in L’Illustration Horticole, volume 27, page 69. George Sydney Bunting later placed it in Epipremnum as Epipremnum aureum in 1964 in Annals of the Missouri Botanical Garden, volume 50, page 28.
