Dracaena surculosa: origin and name history

Dracaena surculosa grows naturally across western and west-central tropical Africa, from West Africa through Cameroon and the Central African Republic to Congo and Gabon. In the wild it forms a branching shrub in warm, humid habitats.

John Lindley named the species in 1828. The name surculosa refers to its branching shoots.

Dracaena surculosa: moisture, humidity and indoor care

• Light: bright indirect light keeps the branching dense and the leaf spotting clear. Filter strong direct sun at the window.
• Watering: while new shoots are growing, water as the surface starts to dry and keep the rest of the mix gently moist. Let the pot drain fully each time.
• Humidity: moderate to high humidity helps the broad leaves stay in good condition, especially while new leaves are opening.
• Potting mix: choose an airy mix that drains freely while holding enough moisture between waterings.
• Temperature: keep the plant at 18–24°C and no lower than 15°C.
• Slower growth: when new shoots appear more slowly, let the surface dry before watering again while keeping some moisture lower in the pot.
• Feeding: use a mild balanced liquid fertiliser while new shoots are growing.
• Repotting: once the roots fill the pot, increase the pot size gradually. Dracaena surculosa grows well with its roots kept fairly snug in the pot.
• Pruning and propagation: trim long shoots just above the point where a leaf meets the stem to shape the shrub. Tip cuttings, stem cuttings and division can all produce new plants.

Common problems with Dracaena surculosa

• New leaves with weaker cream or yellow spotting: dim light can weaken the markings. Move the plant gradually towards a brighter window with filtered light and watch how the next leaves develop.
• Browned leaves or sudden leaf drop after exposure to strong light: direct sun can damage the broad leaves. Move the plant into bright indirect light and filter the strongest window sun.
• Yellowing in wet, heavy potting mix: root rot can develop when the mix stays soaked for too long. Improve drainage and let the surface dry further. When roots feel soft and look dark, trim off the damaged parts with disinfected scissors until the healthy roots feel firm. Discard the rotten pieces, then pot the remaining roots into fresh mix.
• Growth slows or stops with white cottony material around the roots: check the roots and nearby mix for root mealybugs. Isolate the plant and remove as much old mix containing mealybugs as possible, then choose a treatment labelled for houseplants and mealybugs. Use the treatment as directed, and do not apply it again sooner than the label allows.

Dracaena surculosa: name and meaning

Dracaena comes from Greek drakaina, meaning a female dragon. Surculosa refers to the production of shoots or suckers.

Carl Linnaeus established the genus Dracaena in 1767 in Mantissa Plantarum, page 9; Domenico Vandelli had proposed the name.

John Lindley first described Dracaena surculosa in 1828 in Botanical Register, volume 14, plate 1169.
