Dracaena trifasciata ‘Silver Mist’ natural habitat and Dracaena name change

In the wild, Dracaena trifasciata grows in southern Nigeria, parts of west-central Africa and Tanzania. Its tropical habitat has a dry season, and its thick, fleshy leaves hold water through dry periods.

The species was formerly called Sansevieria trifasciata. DNA studies showed that Sansevieria is part of Dracaena, leading to the name Dracaena trifasciata in 2017.

Indoor care for Dracaena trifasciata ‘Silver Mist’

• Water: Wait until the potting mix is dry through, then water evenly and let excess water drain away.
• Potting mix: Use a coarse succulent mix; the container needs drainage holes so water can escape quickly.
• Light: Give bright filtered light. Light shade also works for ‘Silver Mist’.
• Repotting: Move it to a slightly larger pot when new fans fill the surface or roots press against the sides.
• Temperature: Keep ‘Silver Mist’ around 15–24°C and away from cold draughts.
• Humidity: Normal room humidity is fine. Keep the leaves dry and allow air to move between the upright groups of leaves.
• When growth slows: Cooler, darker conditions make the mix dry more slowly, so water less often.
• Feeding: Feed lightly about monthly while new leaves or shoots are appearing.
• Propagation: Separate a rooted side shoot when you want another plant.
• Handling: Gloves help protect skin from sap while dividing or trimming. Keep the plant away from children and pets because chewing the leaves can cause stomach upset.

Dracaena trifasciata ‘Silver Mist’ common plant problems and fixes

• A fan becomes loose and the base softens: Wet potting mix can lead to rot around the base. Check the base and roots, clean and disinfect a knife or blade, then remove every soft area until the remaining tissue is firm and healthy. Discard the rotten material and repot the healthy section in a fresh mix that drains quickly.
• Leaves fold inward or lose firmness: If the roots are firm and the mix is fully dry, the plant is short of water. Water thoroughly and let excess water drain away.
• Pale papery areas develop on the brighter side: Strong direct sun can scorch the leaves. Move the plant to bright filtered light and check fresh growth for improvement.
• A new fan leans or grows weakly: A new fan may lean when the position is too dim or when the roots are weak. Move the plant gradually to a brighter filtered position and check that the roots are firm enough to hold the fan securely.
• Fine webbing, pale speckles or cottony clusters appear: Check both sides of the leaves and the leaf bases for spider mites or mealybugs, then isolate the plant. If treatment is needed, use a houseplant product labelled for the pest and follow the label directions.

Sansevieria trifasciata and Dracaena trifasciata: why did the name change?

Dracaena comes from Greek drakaina, meaning a female dragon. The epithet trifasciata means three-banded.

Carl Linnaeus established the genus Dracaena in 1767 in Mantissa Plantarum, page 9; Domenico Vandelli had proposed the name.

David Prain first described it as Sansevieria trifasciata in 1903 in Bengal Plants, volume 2, page 1054. David Mabberley later placed it in Dracaena as Dracaena trifasciata in 2017 in Mabberley’s Plant-book, edition 4, page 1101.

Sansevieria remains common in horticulture. Pei-Luen Lu and Clifford Morden showed that it belongs within Dracaena in a 2014 DNA study in Systematic Botany, volume 39. Kew’s World Checklist treats Sansevieria trifasciata as a synonym of Dracaena trifasciata.
