Dracaena reflexa var. angustifolia 'Bicolor', widely recognized under its synonym Dracaena marginata, is a refined cultivar admired for its layered color pattern. It develops slender, woody stems that rise bare with age, crowned by tufts of long, narrow leaves. The foliage is deep green at the center, bordered by ivory-yellow bands and finished with a fine edge of bordeaux red. Over time, the plant matures into a snaking, tree-like form that adds elegance and color contrast to modern interiors.
The species Dracaena reflexa var. angustifolia is native to Madagascar and other Indian Ocean islands. Cultivars such as 'Bicolor', 'Red', and 'Colorama' were developed in horticulture for their foliage coloration. Among these, 'Bicolor' is noted for its three-tone striping – darker and more refined than the broader pink of 'Colorama' and more variegated than the solid-edged 'Red'.
Among marginata cultivars, Dracaena 'Bicolor' is admired for its balance of subtlety and color. Its green, cream, and red striping makes it more intricate than the solid 'Red' cultivar but less flamboyant than 'Colorama'. This balance gives it versatility for both minimalist interiors and mixed tropical displays.
The genus name Dracaena comes from the Ancient Greek δράκαινα (drakaina), meaning “female dragon,” a reference to the red resin (“dragon’s blood”) produced by some species in the group.
If you’re looking for a Dracaena that combines refinement with colorful striping, Dracaena reflexa 'Bicolor' is a perfect choice. Its graceful form and three-tone foliage add long-lasting structure and brightness to any living space. Order today and bring home this versatile, low-maintenance cultivar.
