Dracaena fragrans ‘White Stripe’

‘White Stripe’ is a cultivated form of Dracaena fragrans, a species native across tropical Africa. Wild plants grow in moist forest, wooded places near streams and drier forests farther west.

In streamside woodland, the canopy softens the sun while warmth and humidity remain high. This background links ‘White Stripe’ with gentle light and measured, well-aerated moisture.

Dracaena fragrans ‘White Stripe’: light, watering and water quality

• Light: Bright, indirect light supports steady growth. Lower light is tolerated, but new leaves usually emerge more slowly; strong summer sun can scorch exposed foliage.
• Watering: Water when the upper 3–5 cm of mix is dry, soak the root ball thoroughly and let all excess drain. Roots decline if the mix remains wet for long periods.
• Water quality: Rainwater or filtered water is preferable where tap water is hard or high in fluoride, both of which can contribute to brown tips.
• Substrate: Use an airy, slightly acidic houseplant mix with bark or coarse mineral material for drainage.
• Temperature: Keep the plant warm and stable, ideally at 18–27°C, away from cold draughts, cold glass and hot radiators.
• Humidity: Moderate household humidity is usually sufficient; very dry heated air can leave the leaf tips brown and crisp.
• Feeding: Apply a reduced-strength balanced feed every 4–6 weeks while new leaves are opening. Lengthen the interval if growth slows rather than feeding by the calendar.
• Repotting: Repot when roots fill the container or tall canes become unstable, moving up only one pot size.
• Propagation: Take a leafy top cutting or a section of cane and root it with steady warmth. Cuttings reproduce the parent cultivar.
• Winter: Lower winter light slows drying. Wait longer between waterings while keeping the plant warm, but do not leave the entire root ball dry for weeks.

Common problems with Dracaena fragrans ‘White Stripe’

• Brown tips on several leaves: When brown tips appear on several leaves, first check the root ball and the pot rim. A repeatedly dry root ball points to irregular watering; a white crust on the substrate or pot points to salt build-up; damage concentrated beside a heater points to hot, dry airflow. Correct the matching cause, flushing the substrate only when salts are present.
• Leaves rolling or curling inwards: When leaves roll or curl inwards, check below the surface before watering. A dry root ball needs a thorough watering, while damp substrate with limp or yellowing leaves calls for a root check. If moisture is suitable, move the crown away from direct heater or air-conditioning flow.
• Dry marks in pale leaf sections: Pale tissue shows environmental damage readily. A firm mark confined to the window-facing side follows sudden direct sun, while a dark or translucent patch exactly where a leaf touched cold glass points to chilling. Remove the immediate cause and assess recovery from clean new leaves.
• Long gaps and weak new leaves: A crown that produces longer gaps between leaves or progressively smaller growth is receiving too little usable light. Move it closer to a bright window in stages and assess the next leaves; stretched sections will not become compact again.

Dracaena is toxic to cats and dogs

Dracaena contains saponins. Eating the leaves can cause drooling, vomiting, loss of appetite and lethargy; cats may also have dilated pupils. Keep the plant out of reach, and contact a veterinarian if a pet eats it.

What fragrans refers to

The species epithet fragrans means fragrant and refers to the flowers. Dracaena is derived from Greek drakaina, meaning a female dragon.

The genus Dracaena entered botanical literature in 1767, when Linnaeus validly published Vandelli’s name in Mantissa Plantarum. Botanical authorship passes from Linnaeus, who named Aletris fragrans in Species Plantarum in 1762, to Ker Gawler, who published the accepted Dracaena fragrans in Botanical Magazine in 1808.
