Dracaena fragrans 'Warneckii' has grey-green leaves with narrow pale margins. The sword-shaped leaves arch from upright woody stems, and the striping is greyer than the yellow-green pattern of cultivars such as 'Lemon Lime'.
As lower leaves age away, the ringed canes become easier to see. Pale margins show tip burn and scorch clearly, so water quality, fertiliser strength and direct sun are worth watching.
Dracaena fragrans is native to Tropical Africa, where it grows as a shrub or small tree. Indoor plants are much smaller, but they keep the same cane-forming structure, with new leaves produced near the stem tips and older stems becoming visible over time.
'Warneckii' belongs to the striped cane Dracaena group. The spelling 'Warneckei' is also used, and the plant may also appear under Dracaena deremensis.
Dracaena fragrans 'Warneckii' should be kept out of reach of pets and small children. The leaves can cause digestive upset if ingested. Remove shed leaves from the pot surface.
Dracaena comes from Greek drakaina, meaning female dragon. The species name fragrans means fragrant and refers to scented flowers, which are rare indoors. 'Warneckii' and 'Warneckei' are both seen in horticultural use.
