The 1994 origin of Dracaena fragrans ‘Malaika’

‘Malaika’ began with an unusual shoot that appeared on ‘Compacta Variegata’ in the Netherlands in 1994. Ruud Scheffers developed the plant from this growth.

By 1998, new plants were consistently showing the same wavy, twisted and striped foliage.

Everyday care for Dracaena fragrans ‘Malaika’

• Light: Give ‘Malaika’ bright filtered light and soften hot direct sun at the window.
• Water: Wait until the top of the mix feels dry, then water slowly until the mix is moist throughout. Let the pot drain. Rainwater is helpful where tap water has a high mineral content.
• Potting mix: A peat-free mix that stays airy, holds moisture evenly and drains quickly works well.
• Temperature: Keep ‘Malaika’ comfortably warm at roughly 18–27°C.
• Humidity: Normal indoor humidity suits ‘Malaika’. In a very dry room, a small increase can help the leaf ends.
• Feeding: During strong growth, use a balanced liquid fertiliser roughly monthly. Reduce applications when growth slows.
• Repotting, pruning and making new plants: Repot when roots crowd the pot and trim an overlong stem with a clean cut. If you propagate it, start with healthy growth from the parent plant so the striped pattern is carried on.

Problems and solutions for Dracaena fragrans ‘Malaika’

• Brown tips develop on creamy stripes: Mineral-rich water, excess fertiliser and dry indoor air can brown the pale sections. Rainwater or filtered water can help new leaves stay cleaner.
• Yellow leaves appear while the pot stays damp: Let the pot dry more and inspect the roots for rot. Before cutting, clean scissors or pruners with disinfectant. Remove every soft section and stop once the remaining roots are firm and healthy-looking. Discard the damaged pieces and repot ‘Malaika’ in clean, free-draining mix.
• Dry tan or rust-coloured patches: Shift ‘Malaika’ to a bright position where direct sun is softened before it reaches the leaves.
• Dark, wet-looking leaf spots: Remove affected leaves, water the potting mix directly and keep the foliage dry. Leave some space around the crown so the leaves dry quickly.
• Scale, pale speckles, silver marks or cottony growth: Inspect the wavy leaves for thrips and spider mites, then look at the stem joints for scale and mealybugs. Pick a treatment whose label includes the pest you find. Follow its directions, including when a repeat is recommended.

Dracaena fragrans: name and meaning

Dracaena comes from Greek drakaina, meaning a female dragon. Fragrans is Latin for fragrant and refers to the flowers.

Carl Linnaeus established the genus Dracaena in 1767 in Mantissa Plantarum, page 9; Domenico Vandelli had proposed the name.

Carl Linnaeus first described it as Aletris fragrans in 1762 in Species Plantarum, second edition, page 456. John Bellenden Ker Gawler later placed it in Dracaena as Dracaena fragrans in 1808 in Botanical Magazine, volume 27, plate 1081.
