‘Janet Craig’ is a long-established form of Dracaena fragrans that began as naturally different growth on ‘Compacta Variegata’.

The wild species comes from tropical Africa and is also found in areas with a pronounced dry season.

• Light: Bright indirect light supports a full glossy crown. Filter strong direct sun through glass.
• Temperature: Aim for 18–27°C and place it away from very hot windows or strong heat sources.
• Water: After the upper mix dries, water the potting mix thoroughly and allow the pot to drain completely before returning it to its cover pot or saucer.
• Potting mix: Choose a peat-free blend that stays loose and breathable while holding enough moisture for an even watering cycle.
• Humidity: Average to slightly humid indoor air suits the broad foliage.
• Water quality and feeding: ‘Janet Craig’ is sensitive to fluoride, making rainwater or filtered water a useful choice. Keep feeding light while the plant is actively making new leaves.
• Pruning and repotting: Repot once roots are crowded. A tall stem can be shortened at a clean cut and may send out fresh shoots below that point.

• Brown tips or brown leaf edges: Fluoride can be a cause on ‘Janet Craig’. Change to rainwater or filtered water and check for fertiliser buildup in the potting mix.
• New leaves turn unusually pale or yellow in a very hot position: Once temperatures rise above about 32°C, ‘Janet Craig’ can develop this damage. Move it back from hot glass or heat sources and return it to normal room warmth.
• Yellowing develops while the pot stays wet: Let the mix dry more before checking the roots. If you find decay, clean scissors or pruners with disinfectant and trim off all soft tissue. The roots you keep should be firm and healthy. Dispose of the rotten pieces before repotting ‘Janet Craig’ in fresh, well-draining mix.
• Dark, watery or spreading leaf spots: Remove affected leaves, water directly into the pot and keep the broad leaves from sitting crowded together.

Where does the name Dracaena fragrans come from?

Dracaena comes from Greek drakaina, meaning a female dragon. Fragrans is Latin for fragrant and refers to the flowers.

Carl Linnaeus established the genus Dracaena in 1767 in Mantissa Plantarum, page 9; Domenico Vandelli had proposed the name.

Carl Linnaeus first described it as Aletris fragrans in 1762 in Species Plantarum, second edition, page 456. John Bellenden Ker Gawler later placed it in Dracaena as Dracaena fragrans in 1808 in Botanical Magazine, volume 27, plate 1081.
